CHUMBA was founded in 1993 by Ted Tanouye. In his earlier days, he owned a retail bicycle shop. After riding every available high-end frame on the market, he realized that he could make a superior product with his machining and engineering background. He began welding and machining parts in his garage over the years, developing a local following of riders. As the downhill scene grew in the mountain bike industry, Ted built the internationally acclaimed CHUMBA Zulu -- based on the premise that a strategically placed rear shock would reduce unwanted suspension forces activating on the frame.

Technology Produced through Racing
As Ted continued developing frames, he realized the best way to test his designs against his competitors was through the racing circuit. As a small bicycle shop owner, Ted didn't have the money to finance a race team. But his unrelenting passion for the sport drove him to borrow money, and assemble one of the most highly respected race teams in the U.S. By putting his products through demanding race schedules against competitors with multimillion dollar race budgets, he was forced to push technological limits to their outer extremes. The information and understanding he gathered during this time period helped him develop some of the best frames the world has ever seen -- and two national championships in a two year time period.

The Future
The racing legacy of CHUMBA is poured into every frame that we produce today. You can be assured that every aspect of your frame, from the geometry, materials, to the suspension designs, was designed with the feedback gained from the race program. Every CHUMBA you see is a result of our decade long process of developing, innovating, and achieving.
