These grips work. I use to have issues with hand numbness and strain on any ride over an hour in length. I put these grips on and have done 4 hour epics with no hand issues. Solved my problem. They do not obstruct any handling / braking / shifting operations either. I do recommend getting the small women's size though. I have size 11 hands and the smaller women's size is perfect. Only get the large if you have massive paws!
These grips are a little heavy and expensive compared to other grips but the trade off is worth it. I work in a bike shop and have seen ergonomic offerings from a few different companies and I'd have to say that Ergon is by far the best quality out there.

well i read the many mixed reviews and thought id take the plunge at the modest £17.60 price and ive got to say im converted.
it really does take alot of strain off and also seems to soak up road vibration too. previously when i hit a bump, having no suspension i would sometimes feel the shock go in to my wrist and give an unpleasant tingling in the nerve but since ive had the gp1 on its stopped that. riding is much more comfortable with the wrists straight and not in a bent position on wide handlebars, and with palms supported, i dont feel any after ride fatigue after ~10 miles rides ive done so far. another benefit is the palm platforms gives more leverage for going uphills and acceleration which eliminates the need for barends for me.
i haven't experience the negative side others talked about (lack of other hand positions - just move strain to other place in the hand, manoeuvrability, being unable to get your fingers around the grip, strain between the thumb and first finger, etc, etc). i got the womans size (small size, although i have average/large size 9 hands, 9 inches span from thumb to little finger) which is the right size (others complained the large size made too much pressure between the thumb and first finger).
what others say about the angle being critical is true, i found the point where the platform just starts to support your palm is about the right point, a few mm either other way and it felt wrong.
its seems this is a love it or hate it product, but most people seem to love it and i would agree, although most of my riding is on roads, commuting and at cruising speeds, it might be a different story for downhillers or where you need to grip the bars really tight.
i found it does live up to the claims and is alot more comfortable and stops quite a bit of road vibration (compared to the basic bartape on plastic type grips that came stock with my bike).
definitely a cost effective worthwhile upgrade.

These grips are honestly everything they're supposed to be.. and more. I had wanted to try them for a while when they first came out, but couldn't find any. Finally after reading some excellent reviews online, I got my chance. I have since recommended them to another rider that's tried them, and they agree. These grips flat-out rock! I have zero idea how any of these other riders could've found fault with their performance, but I strongly suspect improper installation, positioning, etc... Maybe those guys are missing a couple of fingers or something, but these grips are sooo comfortable. One likely unintended benefit of the "wing" design, is that with the increased surface area, you can actually lean better. The flat surface allows you to use more of your palm as a contact surface, and thus maintain more control. I have been riding mtn bikes since 1987, and road bikes a bit longer. And I say if you're using a "death grip" as one or two guys alluded to, you're doing it wrong anyway. Definitely buy these grips, you'll thank me later!

Reviews on these are mixed. I decided to buy them because there were enough positive reviews, but one of the nay-sayers mentioned the lack of alternative hand positions and that is correct. On plain cylindric grips I can move my hands around, distributing the pressure. With the GP-1, I'm held to one position and ended up with more pain than I'd had with standard grips (Yeti, came with the bike). I took these off and put the old ones back on after three long rides, which I did after setting the angle in accordance with their directions.
I have big hands, so bought the large size. On long downhill runs they really do help relieve the pressure of me leaning on the bars and the added tension of applying the brakes constantly. That one advantage doesn't offset the disadvantages, for me.
For those seeking more comfortable grips, try the Race Face Good and Evil. That's what I'm using now, and they're the best yet.

I was getting numb hands, even on short rides, using my old grips. I read the reviews here for the Ergon grips, especially the notes about grip size and opted for the small grips even though i have medium to large hands and they have made a huge difference, but not instantly. I must say that i have fiddled with the angle of these grips over a long period of time to get the fit just right, this is a very important setting to experiment with and i advise everyone who uses these to do the same, don't just set them up according to the instructions as every rider is different. Off road i have had no problems, going up or down hill, maybe a consequence of the smaller size, they are easier to grab hold of. These grips are very comfortable and being a lock on design, easy to swap from bike to bike.

I bought these originally for my hybrid/commuter and used them on that bike for about 6 months. I then switched them to my mountain bike and took the Ruffian look a likes (by the way, I've owned ODI's and the Forte work just as well for half the price, and you don't have to by separate clamps. Only downside is that they use some internal plastic, but they haven't broke yet and I've had them for 3 years)which I love. Used them on the trail once, and took them off immediately. Less control because your hand is not gripping the bar as much. Unnoticeable on the road, but led to a more scary ride than necessary.
On the commuter, I never could get them to feel "right" I tried several adjustments. Good idea and did take away some fatigue in my palms, but I got just as numb with this grips as with my normal ones. Not worth the money for me.

I've heard a lot about Ergon grips and the reputation they've gained in the endurance world, but I was skeptical that a grip could make much of a difference.
The day before a solo 24 hr race I decided to give these things a shot. Normally I wouldn't just throw something on a bike prior to a long ride but I figured what the hell, if they didn't work out I'd change them in the pit. Of all things comfort oriented, whether it's been a suspension fork upgrade, bigger tires, or even going from a hardtail to a full suspension bike, I honestly feel that this style of grip has been the biggest surprise and value for the money. It was a pleasure to finish a ride and still be able to extend my fingers or make a fist.
One thing about the grips is that I have very large hands. I don't know who is riding the size large because the small more than suited my needs. Maybe large is good for someone touring across the country on flat bars or something, I'm not sure.
Last thing... A few of the other reviewers knocked these grips because of how they felt for downhill. I didn't feel any noticeable difference with the small version. I would also guess that Ergon wasn't designing these grips for the downhiller and it's probably not their intended audience. If you are on a large travel bike, not climbing, and your rides are under 30 miles you can probably stick with a moto style grip. I think they even make one.

This is EXACTLY like the MP1, albeit with "lighter" materials...still heavy as a brick compared to other grips.
I'm not really sure how one can find this "ergonomic." it's true that it provides more surface area for your palms to rest on, but the pain/numbness will shift from your wrists to your elbows on long rides.
Also, the shape makes it more difficult to grip on the handle. This grips are NOT for downhill riders. Seriously.
I tried to change the angle to make the most of it...little to no effect at all.
oh, and Ergon...for the price you are charging on this product, the end caps looks and feels cheap.
Stay away from this product. Makes one wonder how the MP1 sibling got high marks.

I commute 10 miles on my mountain bike. I was having a problem with the stock round grips causing pressure on my medial nerves, leading to mild tingling for the first few minutes after each ride. I tried these new grips for several days. I got the angle adjustment right fairly quickly, and they seemed comfortable early in each ride. However, the tingling I had immediately after riding was actually much worse with these grips, with the added bonus of aching in my wrists for the rest of the day. I think they are designed to reduce pressure on the ulnar nerve, and they may be great for people with that problem, but they end up increasing the pressure right where the nerves come out of the carpal tunnel into the palm. If you have medial nerve issues, these may not be for you. REI took them back, of course, and I'm back to the stock grips and shifting position a lot for now.

These are amazing. I have an alignment problem with the right arm and have always had problems with grips. Used to use bar ends so I could vary positions, but couldn't do it stylistically when I went to riser bars.
They distribute the pressure on your hand so no hot spots. You can slide your hands in/outbound to get slightly different grip. The contours make keeping hold of them easier.
Like many have recommended, you probably need the smaller size. I found that while the larger felt great just holding it, once on my bike it put too much pressure b/w thumb and forefinger.

These grips seem to be appropriate forsomeone who sits in the saddle and puts a lot of weight on their hands. Otherwise I found that the large palm rest gets in the way of being able to grab well with the three outer fingers on each hand. All the strss then goes on your index finger and thumb joint. Decending rough trail at speed your hand tensds to bounce forward off the grip because your outer fingers can't wrap the grip. All this stress goes to the crotch between your thumb and index finger and hurts. If you change the grip angle to compensate for the downhill bounce it then creates a similar difficulty when doing steep standing climbs typical as needed on a single speed. I used these long enough to know that the discomfort never went away. Replaced them with Salsa clamp-ons I won years ago as race schwag. I haven't thought about my hands or my grips since I took these Ergon's off. I think they are strictly for lolly-gagging type riders who lean on their hands a lot in a seated position.

These grips are freakin' awesome. I was constantly thinking about my hands and wrists when I would ride - how bad their position was, how bad they hurt, how numb my pinky would get after seven or eight miles. I bought a set of these on a Friday night, and rode 21 miles of mostly rocky, rooty, east coast single track on Sunday morning. I was no longer thinking about the piss-poor condition of my hands and wrists. I realized that I wasn't thinking about them at all, which was great! These grips not only took away my lower arm ailments, they actually made my entire upper body riding position feel better and corrected (I believe that they kept me in check due to their angle). I would have paid much more for these little buggers, and I consider them to be one of the best upgrades to my bike. I adjusted them so that they pointed just slightly up into my palms as the manual suggests. When I got home, I backed off of that just a hair and retightened them, also as the manual suggests. Perfect. Great product. If you have ailments that are similiar to mine, I highly recommend picking a pair of these up. That's my two cents. BTW....I'm 6ft, 225lbs.

For me, these grips cause such horrible hand cramping in the technical stuff and on sustained downhills that i would have to stop to deal with the pain.
I wear a size large full finger glove, so its not like I have tiny little hands.
I just could not find a position that offered comfort AND control. Sweep of the bars could be the culprit
Seems like a great Idea, felt great in the store, but boy was my first 30 mile day on them miserable. 2nd day was not quite as bad, but still pretty miserable.
I just gave my set away.

I'd concur with most of the other reviewers that said these things are great, but make sure you buy the women's size (thanks for the warning before I bought these things). While I have noticed that any sort of tingly hand/wrist problem that I had previous has nearly completely disappeared, the shape hasn't negatively affected my riding in the slightest. In fact, the grips feel better than most grips and the extra surface area is handy sometimes for when the riding is easy, you can sit back and just use a finger or two on the little platform area.

I took up trials riding recently and bought a trials-specific bike (Simtra ST-1). Within a week my wrists hurt all the time. I was complaining to a friend who has Ergons on his bike and he recommended them. I put them on my trials bike and my wrist problems resolved quickly.
I bought a pair with the bar ends for my xc rig and love them on my Yeti 575.
Extremely comfortable. I have zero complaints. These grips support the wrist and gives a lot more stability, comfort, and damping. I am EXTREMELY happy that my wrist pain has been completely eliminated by these grips.
I highly recommend them.

When properly installed, these grips eliminate wrist pain and tingling. They provide a larger area to place the hand than other grips. More importantly, they keep the wrists in a neutral position to avoid the problem in the first place.
Weaknesses:
They add a little weight. Bring an Allen wrench with you for fine adjutment of the angle of the grips on your first ride. You cannot grip the bars as tight with these grips. However, you can still use you thumb and forefinger to grip the bar itself.

I was initially skeptical about this grips for two reasons, looks and price. I'll put it right out there - these babies ain't cheap, but they are sooooooo comfortable! I put them on my SS as my hands were taking a royal beating and I could not be happier. The big platform for your hand dissipates the forces against your hand over a bigger area and eliminates the ridge of pain found with regular round grips.
These grips are fantastic and I highly recommend them to anyone with a singlespeed full-rigid bike. I assume they'd be good on a FS bike, but without the experience I can't say.

I have never really taken the time to review anything before because most products are reviewed to no end already. I am so happy with these grips so far that I decided to write a review for these.
I wear a men's large glove and I was back and forth trying to decide whether I should get the men's or women's grip. They really should be called small and large instead. I went with the men's and it turns out I like the larger grip a lot. I got the women's grip for my g/f and after riding around a little on her bike I know I made the right choice with the larger grip.
I have about 100 trail miles on these grips and other than having to re-tighten and adjust the angle a little bit they have been great. They do not turn or slip while riding and are very comfortable. During tight and technical sections I was having problem with my hands getting numb from gripping too tight on the bars. These grips have solved that problem completely.
These grips are a bit more expensive than most but they were well worth the $28. Think about how much you are willing to spend on the saddle, shorts, and shoes to get the most comfortable fit you can get and then $28 for great grips does not seem like too much money at all.

These grips are really great. I used to lose sensitivity of my fingertips when going for long bike rides with my old grips. But the thing I hated most: they would continuously slip off my handlebar, especially during long, hot and hard XC rides.
The Ergon MP1 are great affordable grips. They are comfortable, ergonomic and well-made. I strongly recommend it to anyone !

My main problem (previously) was hand numbness, which is caused by the non-ergonomic design of typical stock grips. Cheap grips are popular because most bike riders are just riding around in circles at the forest preserve on sunny days. I ride at least 10 miles daily, all year round, in Chicago. So hand comfort is a big deal to me. All kinds of bumps in my daily commute - bad concrete, manhole covers, expansion joints over bridges, etc.
I have XL glove size, so the Men's model is perfect for me.
I must take issue with one previous reviewer above, who was not happy with the way these grips look. I have had perfect strangers ask me about my grips. (Strangers also regularly ask me about my Bike Friday, but that is a topic for another review.) I think these grips look awesome - like wings for my bike!
Ergonomic stuff always costs more than generic. That's because some smart engineer actually THOUGHT about this product during the design stage. And the packaging is perfect - if you are not sure whether you need Men's or Women's size, just check out your local bike store. You can actually try the grip before you buy it. Installation is quick and easy.
I am not inclined to wax poetic about stuff, but you can tell, I am really pleased with this product.

This is a follow up to my prior review and actually for the women's grip. The men's was too big for my hand (large glove size) and I had trouble hanging onto my rigid singlespeed.
The women's, or more appropriately named small size, is perfect for the large size hand. This grip has a thinner circumference where your thumb and index finger wrap around the grip and it allows the middle finger to fully wrap around the grip as well. You still have the advantage of the paddle portion of the grip which really enables you to lean the bike much better than a conventional grip. To me, this is as important as the increased comfort level the grip provides.
If you have some ability to lean your bike, these grips will enhance your skills with the leverage they provide through the paddle. It is like they remind you to lean the bike. Now, if you do not normally lean your bike into turns, the grips are helping you do this because your palm has somewhere to rest and consequently puts pressure in the right place while turning.
In addition, the grips stay on the bars tight and use a simple plug in end cap which is better than the screw tightened end caps on the other grips. The problem I have with the screwed in end caps is that they come loose from pulling on the grips. This is so because your hand is on the end caps, if you use the whole grip, and eventually they come loose. The plug in type is not accessible while your hand is on the grip.
My best advise would be to make sure you get the right size grip, especially if you are riding a rigid bike. Think Men'size as probably extra large hand and women's as average to large hand.
I was only able to wrap my thumb and index finger around the men's grip, although I can get three and almost four fingers around the women's grip which is a necessary in techy situations.
This is a more comfortable grip that makes it easier to lean your bike into turns. I will use them on all my bikes.

After "test" driving them decided that the smaller size was a better fit for me as well. If you have the opportunity, try both sizes before you make your decision. at 6' 3" I have always had problems with getting grips to fit my hands, every grip I have tried has always felt too small. These are the first grips that have ever fit me. On long rides my fingers would always go numb, these grips don't totally eliminate the hand pain but it takes at least an additional hour or two before I even notice any discomfort. The shape of these grips also lock your wrists into the proper position when riding. I have never felt in more control of the bike especially when cornering. These grips are worth every Penny.

These are made of HARD rubber, which is what you want. The flapdoodle/wingy bits provide support for the base of your palms. They can be micro-adjusted while riding to suit your changing needs. Took mine off after 3 months and rode around on the factory cigars for 20 minutes. Immediately put the Ergos back on. You forget how many problems they solve. $30 for a pair of grips. Yeah. Worth it.

right out of the box thses things have made me more comfortable whether it be on a short climb or a long time of riding. I got them because I have carpel tunnel and these have really helped me not have to grip with my fingers. now I can spread the weight across my entire hand and use my fingers for braking only. I use them in conjunction with my ergo-control ends and now have many more hand positions to choose from on long rides. they grip well when wet also and I have not had my hand come loose even on the rootiest or most technical areas Ive ridden so far and I have yet to have had to grab the bars with more than 3 fingers . its very nice to use my thumbs for shifting only and my middle finger on the brakes. if you have pain in the hands or elbows and have your bike set up correctly, these will help a lot even on non plush trails and even after a long ride. if you develop pain after a couple hours of riding , these will eliminate that as well. Ive been riding for years and these have made the last 2 hours of my long rides or rides when my c.t. is acting up enjoyable instead of just bearable

I finally have the climbing machine I've been after all these years! While I prefer the uphill, I have a tendency to ride until I become fatigued & then slouch over the bars. Ultimately my hands were taking the brunt of this as I'd push against the bar ends and the edge of my grips would cut off the circulation to my hands causing all sorts of discomfort. These grips appear to be the solution. After a couple of rides I couldn't wait to get in front of this computer and start promoting these in any way I can.
If I were to find one thing about these that I wasn't completely comfortable with it would be their position on the downhill. While they are positioned just right for me and my style of climbing, when I went to descend the mountain I found that the "platform" they provide for the palm was somewhat awkward. I'm used to using the heel of my hand to maintain control of the bars and these grips placed the job more on my fingers. Still, the benefits seem to outweigh this and I feel confident I'll get used to it.
Where have these been for my 20 years of mountain biking?! These could have saved me much pain & misery.

These grips are the best i have ever tried! Numb hands and fingers are not totally eliminated, but compared to normal grips, the difference is HUGE. These grips really 'fill' the hand, giving a sense of control and comfort you can only dream about with other grips. Now and then i ride another bike with standard grips (not mine), and after a few miles, it feels like torture. These grips actually increase your grip surface, so even when opening your fist, for braking etc., you still have optimum control, even with wet and cold hands. It becomes very hard to slip off your handlebars with these. They are somewhat expensive, but quality is great. No cracks, chips or whatever, and the clamp AND bolt do not rust. You can adjust them anyway you want and once tightened, they stay put. Ofcourse there is the weight factor, these things are probably the heaviest kind around, but they are worth every extra gram! Bottomline: these grips stay where they supposed to, in your hands. Once tried, you'll never want anything else again, like i do.

Strengths:
These grips stay where they are supposed to, unlike anything I've ever tried before. They provide a relaxed yet alert riding position that doesn't drain energy from arms and hands. Numbness of the fingers is something I'll never experience on this bike again!
Weaknesses:
They are very wide and quite heavy, but of course comfort comes at a price.

Product worked as designed to eliminate hand numbness. Tried them out for about 10 miles today and did not experience any issues. The locking mechanism maintained the grip position well on my aluminum bar even after a few spills.
Weaknesses:
Not sure you would be able to use these with grip shifters.
Bike Setup:
Giant Rainier with Easton EA 50 31.8mm bar, SRAM X.7 trigger shifters and Avid FR-1 levers.
Bottom Line:
This product will really make a differnce in how much you will enjoy your rides if hand numbness has been an issue. I actually felt safer and more confident with the normal hand fatigue eliminated.

Damn good grips! A bit Fugly in the looks Dept. but well worth the price. No more hand numbness! Great on long DH's, the flat portion gives your palm a nice place to rest.
Weaknesses:
very minor issue: I'd like to see two clamps on each end of the grip. I had to scuff the clamp & carbon bar with sandpaper to prevent slippage.

Been suffering from hand numbness for years. Tried the Specialized gloves, grips, new grips from other companies, nothing worked. These do. Thank you MTBReview subscribers for helping me answer some questions about these grips before I bought them. I called some local bikeshops, no one even heard of them. Went on REI.com and for $25 bucks, there they are. Easy to install, comfortable as all hell. My hands are not that large and even the men's grips arent that bad (I know others here say go with the woman's model for smaller hands). I would highly recommend these grips. Thank God is all I gotta say.

Bar end caps may not fit all handlebars. I'm using Ritchey flat bars and the end caps are a tad small.

Don't let the unusual appearance fool you. These grips rock! They go on easy and clamp down tight. Absolutely no twisting and they are super comfortable with an infinite range of adjustment. If you've ever wrestled with trying to install/remove a traditional grip you're gonna love 'em. If you've ever found your hands crawling around on the bars, searching for a comfortable position you're gonna love 'em. Just as comfortable after 8 hours of riding as they are after 1 hour, these grips are especially suited to those doing epic rides or endurance racing. Try 'em. Your entire upper body will thank you.

Bottom Line:
After suffering for nearly all of my fifteen years racing with hand cramps, fatigue, and numbness, I had hoped this product would be a godsend. It was unquestionably a huge improvement, but it did not solve my particular problems completely. This might simply be the cumulative damaging effects of fifteen years in the saddle.
These grips are unique and definitely feel good when you first try them. I believe they even helped me corner better, as they provided a larger surface area to exert counter-steering pressure when diving into corners. Those riders who have been thinking of finally losing their bar ends, these grips might help you do it.
If you expect to use them with carbon bars, be wary. My Bontrager XXX Lite bars have reinforced ends to accomodate bar ends. I had to clamp these VERY tightly to get them to stay put--and they still slipped. I then lightly sanded the high gloss finish common on Bonti carbon bars and posts and that seems to have fixed the problem. I suspect this will not be an issue on aluminum bars.
In addition, if you do not have large hands you might find the diameter of these grips uncomfortably large, making it more difficult to reach your levers. I plan to investigate the dimensions of the women's version to see if they might be more comfortable.
Lastly, I already wrote the company suggesting they develop a "shorty" version for Gripshift so I can put my hacksaw away, and also suggested they consider a smaller diameter version for those of us with smaller hands.
All in all, this is indeed a revolution in grip design and I expect they will only get better.
