piss-poor customer service and warranty policy | | Bottom Line: | Had a Kooka crankset for about six months or so, never had any trouble at all. Light, great colors, seemed pretty good. A couple weeks ago, I was cranking up a STEEEP little incline in granny geat when I heard that sound nobody likes... creeeaaakk POP! ka-ping! and everything came to very sudden stop, including my balls on the top tube. I knew someting just got shredded, looked down, inner chainring gone. laying in two twisted, broken pieces on the ground. Evidently the bolts holding the chainring on sheared and the ring just folded and broke. Now, I understand that lightwieght parts like that may not be the strongest things in the world, but then again, neither am I - I would never have thought that I had enough torque to do something like that. Light, cheap, strong, pick two... well, the things damn sure aren't cheap! I would expect even a light part like that to hold up a little better. Here's what really pissed me off, though -- called Kooka to see if they would warranty the part - well, sure, the chainrings are warranteed unconditionally - but the aluminum bolts holding it on aren't, and since they failed causing the chainring to fail, I would have to BUY a new one... This might be reasonable, if I had replaced Kooka's bolts with something else, but I bought this as a set. I would expect them to use hardware of the same quality as their product. Which is evidently pretty poor. (don't get me wrong, still love the cranks. But I'm a little hesitant to hammer down on those chainrings now) Anyway, I went ahead and bought a new chainring... but this one says "Raceface" on it and is bolted on with good 'ol steel. Mavic MTB crank arms & bottom bracket (die-hard beauties from the early 90's), Suntour XC Pro front derailleur | | Bottom Line: | 4mm thickness make these a little beefier than most standard-issue rings. Slight ramps are machined out from the insides of the mids and outers, which make a slight improvement in shifting. These have functioned with no durability problems for 2+ years, and moderate wear on the anodization (much less than I expected considering the constant chain contact). The choice of colors is tasty, and makes for a very custom-looking crankset. I likes 'em... | Overall Rating: |
