Horizon Park

Quick, rocky from place to place, good uphills and downhills, killer uphill at the end of the ride, especially after several loops. When muddy, can be dangerous, but fun. Good view of the river in places. Can be ridden by the whole family.
Summary: This trail was amazing, there is not much to say that hasn't already been said. It was well worth the trip, and i plan on making the drive many more times. Some reviews talk about this being a trail not recommended for beginners but i think if you know your limits this trail is awesome for getting some experience. I consider myself a beginner/intermediate rider and i was ok, granted i did have to walk up some stuff and had a couple spills but nothing major. The trails are amazingly maintained and very well marked. Me and my buddies thought the old concrete plant was pretty awesome, worth getting off your bikes and walking around, and plus will give you a little break. Overall this is my favorite trail i have ridden so far.

Summary: You won't believe you are in Kansas! The course loop is approximately 9 miles long with over 1000 feet of climbing and 90% single track. The remaining 10% is primitive double track. There are flat and fast open throttle sections as well as wooded trails and rocky, technical track. Rolling roller coaster like descents intermingle with short ascents, drops and whoop-de-doos. The energy sucking climb towards the end of each lap will slow even the strongest rider. After a few laps you'd swear you were on an EPIC! Bottom line, you won't be able to wipe the grin off your face.
Horizon is set on a wooded bluff overlooking the Arkansas River as it turns south into Oklahoma. It is adjacent to the Kaw Wildlife reserve. And just so you know, mountain lions have been spotted in the area. This is limestone country... if you know what I mean. Also, lot's of bluestem grass and yucca plants. Kind of a prairie/desert habitat on the bluff and thick woods in the river valley and on top of the hill.
Now for some revised info. Horizon Park is really called Camp Horizon or the Horizon United Methodist Center (800.486.4425). I've always wondered if we should start a new thread on this trail, but no biggie. Also, the trail is one big 9+ mile loop, with more planned in the future, not the 10-12 miles stated in the description. Camp Horizon is only 7 miles from Arkansas City, Kansas. Directions to the camp can be found at www.horizoncenter.org . And, some may disagree, but the trail can be highly technical in spots, but for the most part is easy to moderate. The trail is maintained by several local mountain bikers from south central Kansas and the Kansas Singetrack Society. The trails are open 24/7. Hat's off to Horizon for giving us access to some of the best terrain Kansas has to offer! There is no day fee, but the camp does have a donation box at the trailhead, and a few bucks are much appreciated. All proceeds go directly to the camp.
Also, check out the Tour de Lizard.

Recommended Route: Starts right off the parkin lot. The trail is easy to follow after that.

Summary: I haven't ridden for a few months butr decided to get back in the swing on this trail. I am used to riding rocky trails in Texas and this has that. This has many elevation changes large and small - excellent especially for Kansas. It has some technical sections that get real hard the more tired you get. I was burning before the first turn back into the parking lot. Very enjoyable and I brought an entire backpack full of water - I drank almost all of it. I'm gonna ride this baby many more times!!

Summary: If your in the area you've got to ride this trail--it's got everything. Camp Horizon is a privately owned Methodist church camp and should be applauded for keeping this trail up.
Want to ride singletrack-it's there; scenic views-got 'em; steep downhills-u bet; monster climb-they've got a doozie!
Pretty well marked trail that took about 2 hours to ride, but I'm sure I can cut a lot of time off on the next trip. (I missed a few turns.)
Like I said, if you're in the area ride it and don't forget to put a few $$$ in the donation box at the start, it'll be well worth a few bucks.
Recommended Route: Go down from the parking lot and follow the signs. For the complete route don't take the first sign back to the parking lot, besides the fun starts after that!
Other recommended trails in the same area: In Kansas? Come on, this has to be the only game in the whole state.

Summary: As a native of Arkansas City, I can tell you that this trail is by far the best southern Kansas has to offer. I have lived in the Kansas City area for a while now and can only compare this trial to Landal in MO. This trail rocks theres a little something here for everyone. This isnt the kind of trail for the faint of heart. So leave your huffys at home. If you are in AC stop by Spoke 'n Things they will hook you up. Also if you need some cappuccino to warm your day up stop by Browns on main as well. There I get props for supporting my little sisters shop. http://www.horizoncenter.org/
