4 Winds Cross Creek Horseshoe Bend
11 reviews
 4.45 of 5

These trails are within 15 miles of one another and offer a wide variety of riding. 4 Winds is true cross country; Cross Creek is pure technical and Horseshoe Bend is in between. Riders can complete all three in one day, or make it a weekend and enjoy the great camping/lodging/nightlife the Lake has to offer.

Summary:
cross creek is no more, but its been replaced by perfect singletrack - the 'honey run' trail (reminds me of arkansas). honey run, on the south side of the lake of the ozarks state park, has 2 loops and a connector: south loop 2.8mi, north loop 4.5mi, and the connector at 3.2mi. its a total of 14mi because you have to do the connector out and back, the earthriders out of kc and some locals did a supreme job. the 'bittersweet' trail is located down horseshoe bend, near the dam. its all singetrack as well and like the honey run, horses arent allowed. bittersweet is a stacked loop, each loop is 4mi and when ridden correctly its 8mi (starting from carls mkt) on HH. bring the elbow and knee guards if youd like to do the stunts.

Recommended Route:
on the honey run, riding the north loop counter clockwise is a little faster. bittersweet is 'directional' and must be ridden like a figure 8, if not you wont enjoy the stunts. to get accurate maps, stop by ozark outdoors & cyclery near the dam, 5 min from carls mkt (the bittersweet TH).

Other recommended trails in the same area:
4 winds when ridden the correct way is a true classic. its usually pretty raw and rough yet extremely satisfying.

Summary:
Rode on the 31st of July. Spent nearly three hours banging around on the 25 or so miles of trails. I spent sometime climbing and ripping back down the same hill (narrowly missing severe road rash). The Four Trails (red blaze 16.5 miles) was the toughest on the north east side. However, it was ridiculously overgrown and/or busted up by horses in several places. Three or four fallen trees made for some hike a bike. The trail offers technical, climbs, downhills, log rolls, creek crossing.

As for the guy below me who insisted he was infected with a world record amount of ticks even with tick repellent..well..get a new repellent. I use "Deep Woods Off" for all my outdoor needs (no I didnt get paid for that commercial) and had absolutely no ticks, although I did eat a spider or two. I was a bit cautious at first because of some of the overgrown sections and was certain I would be tick stricken even with repellent.

Be sure to see Tim at Ozarks outdoors and cyclery on Bagnell Dam Drive in Osage Beach.

Recommended Route:
Red Trail counterclockwise..also try Bittersweet, and a new "secret" trail set to open to the public in the fall, but if you tell them Tim told you about it...you can ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
All Ozark Lake Trails, Binder Lake in Jeff City, and Berryman.

Summary:
Had a great time on this trail, and always enjoy most trails in Missouri b/c of the rolling hills, but due to the close proximity of water, you really need to watch for insects. My brother and I came back after our first ride with him having 29 mosquito bites, and 89 tiny tics (thought it was spectacled dirt at first). I had 12 bites & around 50 tics. This is even with repellant on.

Summary:
4 Winds is a cross country course that is totally exhilerating. Feel free to let it go and get ready for the next climb or a section of fast singletrack. Cross Creek is a bit more technical as forementioned but it has great rewards at the end and is a lot of fun. For the more intermediate rider I would implore the soul to check out Horeshoe Bend. It carries a mix of fast singletrack and climbs but also includes the rush of some great technical sections that are absolutely a blast.

Recommended Route:
I won't tell you a recommended route because, well, they're all great depending on your riding style and your time frame. I will tell you to stop at Ozarks Outdoors and Cyclery to see Tim. He will set you up with some great maps and will also set you on the right course for your style of riding or if you have a time frame for finishing he will tell you the length and difficulty of each route. You can also visit him at http://ozoutdoorsandcyclery.com It's well worth your time.
