Chadwick Motocross Park
10 reviews
 4.5 of 5

Chadwick is a large part with 100 miles of trails. You can find everything from 1' singletrack to full on jeep roads. The only rule is steep and rugged. Many portions of the trails are really washed out from the motorcycles, making some climbs virtually impossible. The geographical layout consists of several ridges and hollows, fanning out from H highway like fingers on a hand. If you know your way around or read the map carefully you can plan your rides along ridges, utilizing the steeps for some serious downhill action. Once you've bottomed out, you can ride the hollows back and make a quick walkup or steep climb and do it again. Read the map carefully or go with an experienced Chadwick veteran. If you ask the dirt bikers what trails are good they'll not send you on good bicylec trails, just there favorite roosting grounds. 108 is a must do, a mile downhill with numerous big air jumps that left the people from Bike magazine raving. 101, ran from the family use area to Flybow hollow and back is another good run. You get some great views of the Ozark hills. Most ridges peak at about 1350 feet, with the hollows at about 1000 feet. Be prepared to do some climbing, but its well worth it. The dominant surface texture is loose rock with exposed tree roots, embedded rocks, and lots of ledges on downhill drops. Most trails are wide and fast, offering several different lines to choose from. This trail network still yields new stuff to me after a year and a half of near-weekly riding. You'll never run out of trail. This place will either make a biker out of you or kill you. A must ride for anyone who considers themselves a serious technical rider.

Trail Directions
Take 65 highway south from Springfield to the highway 14 Ozark exit. Go east through Ozark, Sparta, Oldfield, and finally Chadwick (don't blink). Buy a permit at Kay's store in Chadwick (it's the only one) and turn south on H highway. You will encounter two campgrounds on the west side of the road about 3 and five miles from the H highway junction, Camp Ridge and Cobb Ridge. Follow the brown forestry signs to the camgrounds. Maps are available at Kay's store, from the Ava Ranger Station, and are often stocked at the trailheads. Trailheads are everywhere. 113 is a good trail that leads out from Camp ridge in both directions, wrapping aropund the day use area parking lot, and will lead you to numerous connectors. From Cobb Ridge you can take 171, the main dirt road, to 101 which starts at a family use area where you will find several trailheads.

Ridden Trail:
Every few months

Summary:
I've ridden Chadwick once on a mountain bike and about 20 or 30 times on my motorcycle (God rest its saintly soul). As if the other reviews, legends, and horror stories aren't enough; take it from me: This place will kick your freshly-powdered arse, lassy. I don't care who you are. I've never enjoyed a good spanking until I rode here. Yes, the rumors are true. 4 foot rock ledges on steeeeeep downhills, loose rock galore, fallen logs, trails covered in tree branches, 3 foot deep mudholes, fast descents, impossible climbs, and Satan himself nipping at your heals the whole way. One downhill in particular, I foolishly tried to make an uphill on my motorcycle. STUPID! It took me a solid 2 1/2 hours to make it up the hill. My bike kept dying and I'd have to lift its dead 200 pound weight up and over ledges and logs. I was out there until after 9 p.m. (summertime 2001) and just made it out with enough daylight to see my truck. Anyway, 108 is great. Also, though, if you take 108 heading west from Camp Ridge, you will come to a fork with 108 heading left and I believe it's 130 or 135 heading right. Take 130 or 135 whichever it is, and you will find a downhill with larger manmade dirt jumps. Several in a row. Very very sweet. Much more air than 108. I think that's where it is. I'll confirm it. I'm going there this week, so I'll post another review. By the way, my buddy and I rode Chadwick on a hardtail and a rigid bike. Who's got hair?

Recommended Route:
Go to the trials area. I haven't yet, but I've seen pictures and heard stories. WIIIIIICKED! 113 to 108 is popular and yes, very fast and fun.

Summary:

Well I remember this one time when my friend's dog chased a cow into the field below the 105 junction. We had to ride in after it and made a new trail called 132A. Oh you sunk my battleship!! Chadwick is the best riding in the Springfield area.

Recommended Route:
Get a map... ride with a local... don't mess around... you'll get lost and killed by an ax murderer.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Devil's Den, Arkansas; Moccasin Gap Horse Trails, Russellville, Arkansas

Summary:
Everyone said 108 is cool but I like trails 115 and Dairy Queen hill. They are some of the narliest downhills around this place rocks. If you haven't ridden there yet remember to bring a friend there is alot of trail, you also NEED a map. If you like to ride in the winter most all motocycles are gone so we get the trail to our selfs. It's a must do

Recommended Route:
Same as everyone else, but there is back ways in.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Ride here if you don't mind stpping at the doctor on the way back. You almost have to like cliffs or it's hard to ride.

Summary:
Okay, first and foremost, take a map. Don't "memorize" the map. TAKE IT! A compass isn't a bad idea either. This was/is a motocross park intended for bikers with 400 miles worth of fuel under them and 400cc's of power between their legs. Chadwick is literally a maze of trails. Our first day of riding turned out to be a four and a half hour journey in 100 degree 90% humidity heat. All because I thought I memorized our route. Many apologies, Brock!! Now that we have that out of the way....
Garner is keen on parking at Camp Ridge and taking a trip down the 108. Garner knows his stuff when it comes to Chadwick. The 108 has many big jumps with nicely bermed corners and it's all downhill. Very tasty. But from there I suggest trying a right at the 113 and climbing up to the 114. Climb/ride/drag yourself up to the 138A. It's worth it. It has many sweet rock ledges to work your suspension. Nothing too hairy, though. The biggest is probably around three feet. Although we've only been down there once (anybody wanna join us? E-mail me at Bonesonline@yahoo.com) we plan on hitting this trail many times in the days to come. And on a lodging note: We suggest staying in Springfield for a few good reasons. One, cheap motels with awesome air conditioning. Two, you have a place to take an afternoon nap after your morning ride so you can ride again that evening. Three, nightlife. WARNING: Springfield locals have a real love/hate deal with us bikers. I don't get it. We thought we'd do an urban ride on our first night there and check out our environment. We were yelled at by car loads of screaming, hormone-crazed women and nearly ran over by beer-consumed jeepers flying by about six inches from your handlebars. Maybe it was a full moon, I don't know. A local cop told me they've had eight bike-meets-car-and-loses fatalities in only four months. Driving is a good thing. No offenses to the locals, though. We had a very good time. And as far as the motocrossers go, they are all about being cool to us. We saw about a dozen on our trip and everyone of them waved at us and they slowed way down so as not to freak us out. Very cool in my books. Bring lots of water.
We only went to one bike shop in Springfield, but they have about four to choose from. Check them out and support the locals. Get off your keester and get down there, man! Time's a wastin'! It'll be worth your time. I'm giving Chadwick 4 tires now but I've only seen a fraction of what it has to offer. It's very likely that it could hold a 5 tire rating in the near future.
