Deception Pass

Deception Pass state Park is visited by 4 million people a year but most of them just look at the bridge and go home. The are extensive trails here and bikes are allowed on them all (this may change soon, in 2000?) The trails can be ridden in the individual areas or linked together between many areas. Some will be linked by roads. Maps are out there but most trails are clearly marked, but the best trails are not marked. For info send inquiries to spencerharringto@hotmail.com and I will supply free directions/maps/etc, whatever I have, heck i may even ride with you if you ask nice. Some of the best riding is in the Hopyous Point Area and around Cornet bay. There is also a back entrance to this area by going down DUCKEN ROAD, take it to the end and you will see the trailhead. This trail id fire road but you the cut off on many single track sections. DON'T worry about getting lost most trails connect together and will circle back so feel free to explore.
From I5 take highway 20 towards Anacortes and Whidbey Island. Take the highway to the LEFT towards the ferry landing to Port Townsend / Whidbey Island (don't continue into Anacortes). Follow the road to Deception Pass state park. The park starts where the highway speed is reduced to 40 mph, once this happens there are trails and places to ride all over this area. Some of the places to park are at: Bowman Bay, Roserio Beach, THE Bridge, Cranberry Lake or the park proper. There are also a bunch of trails off Cornet Bay Rd.
Trail Length
1-50 miles/ loop or out and back/pick an areal or all areas.
Recommended Route: I start behind Island grill then go down through west beach through the campground then to north beach I ride the north beach trail up to the bridge then around the perimeter to cornett bay then the lower pereimeter back to island grill about eight miles.
Other recommended trails in the same area: blanchard mtn, lost lake,

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: This is a good area to train/ride during the winter months when there aren't any people around. The trails are well groomed but not very challenging, the views are nice though. Goose Rock area has the only really technical sections in the entire park complex. Avoid this place during the summer months, waaay too many hikers and dogs to be safe.
Recommended Route: The Goose Rock ascent/descent
Other recommended trails in the same area: Anacortes City Forest Lands (i.e. Mt Erie/Hart Lake/Little Cranberry)

Ridden Trail: Every few months

Summary: My house backs up against Houpus Point woods. This area is very average riding. Stinging nettles are terrible from May thru September, and the trails are very muddy for 8 months a year. The area is relatively flat. There are several good trail sections, but it isn't worth making a special trip. Goose Rock has some good trails, but you are sharing them with thousands of tourists, so be very careful on the decents.
Recommended Route: Hoypus Point and Goose Rock
Other recommended trails in the same area: Fort Ebby is a far better collection of technical trails. They are maintained by the local bike club and marked very well.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: See above, this ride is a big loop that can get even larger if you cross the deception Pass Bridge and ride in the Rosario and Bowman Areas. This loop I described can be entered into at any point. there are also many other off shhot trails, some I have ridden and others not, but they usually connect back into the loop. My ride distance is unknown but I guess about 10 miles and it takes about 2 hours. I will update the mileage when my computer gets on my bike.
Recommended Route: I start at my house and ride down my street to Troxell road, then i turn onto Anglers Haven and cut thru my neighbors no trespassing sign and up the backside of Hoypus Point. From here i enter the actual trail system into the Hoypus point Preserve or some such thing. I ride around the East side of this hill and drop down to the end of Cornet Bay Road. I ride the road up to the Cornet Bay ELC and cut thru there to the beginning of the Goat Rock Perimiter trail. This trail takes you thru about 5 steep switchbacks and then down the other side. about .5 miles around the other side there is a cutback off the main trail that goes up to Goat Rock sunnit, this section is steep and pretty technical (roots, rocks, mud etc) then I rest on the top and look out over the sound and the military base. Then i ride back down the same way I came up and head under the Deception Pass bridge and down to west Beach. Then I ride up the road a little way to the next trail that takes me up to the highway and ubnder it and then down toward the Cornet Bay ELC and Goat Rock Perimiter Trail, but instead of going into the ELC I make a right and ride parallet to it. This drops me behind the Island Grill and I then ride on Highway 20 to Ducken Road, 1/2 mile. I take Ducken Road to the end, 1 mile, and there is a trailhead into Hoypus Point and i ride this Firetrail to the end and it turn into single track that returns me to Anglers Haven Road and bach up the hill to my house.
Other recommended trails in the same area: This whole area rips. other trails in the area include the Anacortes Community Forest Lands (many sections, maps available at the Visitor Info in Anacortes $3)Fort Ebey, Kettles
