Bunchgrass-Steam Mill loop
1 reviews
 5 of 5

Took us three attempts to hook this up as a loop. Most will do Bunchgrass as DH only..when it is a relatively good uphill...Wanders thru the aspen and mtn meadows on a killer piece of 1-trk. Couple of nasty uphills. Love the scenery...Some hike-a-bike envolved to get to Steam Mill(~.8m/800''). A couple of ole boys on horseback showed us the cutoff to get to Steam Mill...looked @ us like we were nuts... Actual Coords. below. The drop-in from the hike-a-b was Capitol++..squirreling thru pines, switchbacks, pine needle/rocky little drop-ins..@ the bottom of this, the tr. intersects Stm.Mll...you''ll know cause the old steam eng.is lying there just down from the Xing. We rode up from the intersect w/Steam Mill tr. to Steam Mill Lake..~1.3mi..Then down down thru the pine & aspen, creek X''s, just an overall hoot to blast down. Challenging/FUN/Singletrack +++ It''s bordering on epic .. 16+ mile loop w/~3000'' vertical..just up..heh heh..and ~3000'' down.. Bring a lunch and plenty ''o'' H2O. Camera too, No-one-no-where..best time to do this is Aug. No snow and dry enough trails.

Trail Directions
Dr up ~3.2 mi past Tony Gr.turn. As you dr. past T Gr..take note..~.4 mi up is the old tr.hd for Bunchgrass. On the left..an old gate hidden in the trees..remember this..behind rd.barrier..Dr up to Beaver Spring turn off..turn left off of main rd. A few hundred ft. in, park in the lot. Get on bikes and head back down rd to BnchGrs TH. N41 53.505-W111 33.949..Hd up towards Wht Pne Lk..5.4-5.5 mi from Tr.Hd. is the critical turn right..Hike-a-b to Stm Mll. N41 55.821-W111 37.642. Small nearly hidden tr. that takes off almost 180 of itself...You can tell if it's the right one as it heads straight up towards the ridge. Nasty Nasty hike ...but worth...@ the ridge..drop into Stm Mill. Fun Fun Fun...At intersect,N41 56.527-W111 37.300, go up to Stm Mll Lk another ~1.3mi..or down to Fun zone...At the bottom just follow dirt rds down and will eventually lead to the parking lot where you parked and left the Cold BEER...you'll need it..

Summary:
We plotted this ride looking at old topo maps. Turned out to be one of the best...It's a tough trail..sections are...but overall is one of the best that Mtn trails have to offer. Don't go too early as the trails WILL be muddy...Aug sometime is good..Carvy 1-trk w/rocks, trees, creeks, you name it..and Cows...watch out for land mines...always come out of this one w/cow crap on me. But...so what..I can wash..give it 5 flaming stinkys on the chart. Usually don't list a tr. unless it's that good...Plan on 5 hrs. depending on your shape..e-mail me if you want to know more...

Recommended Route:
Bring a GPS and use the coords. supplied above and you'll find it. A treasure for sure..if you like challenging and tech trails..There are spots that just are picture perfect, not all hard...but still...experienced riders...you'll bonk if you're not used to the mtns and their lack of O2...

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Up Ricks and down Steel Canyon, Ephraim's grave loop, Jardine is fun for a warm up to the season, Bunchgrass up to Wht Pine Lk and down..saves gas..Tr18 loop(Ogden)
