Belgatos Park
2 reviews
 3.5 of 5

This isn't exactly destination mountain biking, but if you live in the neighborhood and you like to mtb, get off your tookas. Belgatos is comprised of a small network of uncrowded, narrow fire roads. There are very few flat sections and there are a few short, but steep sections. A ranger once told me the 1st switchback on the climb of Santa Rosa trail was 18 degrees. The trails of Belgatos aren't very technical, except for the occasional root, sandy-gravelly switchbacks, and seasonal erosion grooves (these usually get repaired every spring).

Santa Rosa trail can also be used as an approach to Shannon Rd, Kennedy Rd. and the infamous Sierra Azul for mtbikers that live in the glorious Cambrian neighborhood of San Jose.

Other trails include the Ridge trail that connects Harwood to Belgatos park. If you start at Harwood, this fire road undulates along a ridge (duh) before a final steep plunge to BG park.

The adjacent Heintz Open Space is closed to mountain bikers, but it is similar in size and trail profile compared to Belgatos...or so I have been told.

Rangers report a new trail will be opened in early 2007 at the very top of Harwood, just beyond the fire gates. This appears it will be a mellow switchback fire road connecting Harwood and Hicks Rd.

Summary:
very short trail system, one can cover all legal trails in about .45-1.5 hours. I would consider it to be more of a excercise walking path for the surrounding neighbor hood. Good place if you don't have much time for a ride or are in need of some dirt testing needing a bit of up hill strain and fair down hill angle descend

Recommended Route:
try it both ways, either make a right turn at the trail entrance on harwood descending to belgatos park and up to serra azule rd or go straight at trail head up old steep asphault rd to santa rosa dr to serria azule dr and descend from there back to BG park and up to harwood.

Summary:
Dirt, gravel, sand, and bark ascents and descents.

Recommended Route:
Start at Walgreen's plaza at Harwood and Blossom Hill Road. Ride up the paved Harwood Road. Turn right onto the dirt Ridge trail and get ready for a party. Ride Ridge trail down to a flat section, take the left fork just after the flat section, and before the steep plunge to the park. Cross the foot bridge then climb to Santa Rosa trail. Take the switchback trails up and up. At the top of the third switch back there is another fork in the road. If you go left you can ride a few rollers to Santa Rosa road and beyond to Shannon road and Kennedy road. If you go right at the top of the switch backs you can ride 0.1 miles to the edge of the forbidden Heintz Open Space. Absolutely do not ride your mountain bike in this open space reserved for hikers and equestrians. You must not ride the Sky Line and Valley View Trails in a one mile loop. There is no way you should ever drop down the Valley View Trail to Regent Drive. If you find yourself at the top of the paved Regent Drive and surrounded by cookie cutter million dollar homes, don't even think about riding up the Vista Trail.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Kennedy and the Sierra Azul network. Quicksilver. El Sereno.
