I picked up the '08 because I knew the frame would take a beating and the parts spec was 10x better than last year and the best I could find for the money. If you are also into dirt jumping this bike is light enough to pull tricks on in the air, have a smooth landing, and roll away looking cool. | | Weaknesses: | Things seem to come loose fast, my front shock/ hub makes a clicking sound when you land on it. $1150.00 | | Purchased At: | Direct from Kona | | Strengths: | Great first freeride/DH bike, low price | | Weaknesses: | Marzocchi fork, 450 lb spring on Fox rear shock too light | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | Stock setup, clipless Shimano M545 pedals | | Bottom Line: | I am a bike patroller for a resort in Colorado, so I'm on my bike every day, and I've had almost no complaints. I've given it quite a beating and it's still running like it did right out of the box. Certainly a few scratches (both in the bike and in me) but still runs like a champ.
I'm on the 2007 model (I'm not sure what the older versions have for forks) and it comes with a Marzocchi Drop Off Triple. Have to say, I'm not overly impressed. Isn't nimble like a cross country fork, but doesn't suck up bumps like a downhill fork. Kind of the One-Size-Fits-None compromise sort of thing. It's still riding alright, but it doesn't compare with a Fox 36 or 40. But for the price, I can't expect too much more. Also, I'm only about 160 lbs and when I talked to the Fox rep and he looked at my 450 lb rear shock spring, he said he was suprised I hadn't broken it and swapped it out for a 550 lb. Now I'm not really that heavy that I should need a 100 lb heavier spring ... what happens when someone weighing 220 buys this bike?
Overall, a great first freeride/DH bike, decent parts for the money, and a good value. If you've been riding for a few years and are a pretty experienced freeride/DH rider, I'd recommend something more like the Yeti AS-X with a Fox 40 or something similar.
I'm a fan of Kona in general (but not Marzocchi ... can you tell?), and this bike hasn't disappointed me at all. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

| | Similar Products Used: | Mi primera bicicleta de descenso. | | Bike Setup: | De stock. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Hayes HFX9s are very good breaks.. until you need to bleed them! | | Weaknesses: | The stock parts on the bike could be better (however what do you expect for the low price) Pedals supplied with the bike are not very good compared to other flat pedals on the market | | Similar Products Used: | Mongoose Black diamond double, Orange Patriot 66, Scott Ransom | | Bike Setup: | Stock parts, using Shimano M545 spd pedals | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line is this is a very good bike.
