I absolutely love this bike. It is a champ on fast XC riding and very precise for the technical stuff. I've had fantastic luck w/ my lefty fork. The low BB leaves you hitting your pedals off things occasionally, and it isn't the most ideal for log crossings. In the proper performance envelope (which I will admit I diverge from), it is an amazing bike. It still does all mountain riding well enough with the 2.5" of travel in the rear. I've never ridden a bike that wants to climb like this one though.

This is one of the best bikes for your bucks. It has spectacular steering and perfect tracking. With 2.6 in of travel you wont notice any movement of the rear end. This bike can take some bigger hits compared to other XC racing machines, But I would not recommend taking on any drop that is larger than two feet if you want to keep you bike whole. This bike can tackle any rock garden or steep section. The lefty fork really smooths out the trail and is butter smooth and it looks sweet two. This bike can take almost any thing that the trail will through at you, but remember it is still a cross county race bike and taking that four foot drop could end with a crash.

This is a wonderful bike for the roadie getting into Mtn biking. The suspension manages to do really well on the usual trail stuff and keeps me from killing myself on more rigorous stuff. Great climbing, fantastic balance. I spent more for this than I planned but you MUST TEST RIDE your options. The only bikes matching the ride of the Cannondales cost 2-3 x as much. It's all about balance and speed out there in the wilderness, this is one great machine!

As a repeat buyer of a Scalpel I feel this is the best quality product for the money in this segment of the market. Affords a strong climbing and XC performance.
You will not see many complaints about this bike....those that talk about new bikes with hyrdracoils, etc. are bs'ing....that's a lawsuit if it's true (I.e. selling used as new). I highly doubt Cannondale wants litigation.

I started riding 1 1/2 years ago on a Cannondale f400 hardtail, I loved the hardtail but it hurt my back on long rides over washboard, rocks etc. I decided to go with the Scalpel for the simple fact that it is basically a light hardtail with a shock. Turn off the rear shock and see what I mean. It has served it's purpose very well, I am 220 lbs, 6'4" and have ridden over 500 miles on it. XC riding, Basic Downhill stuff, I Rode Moab, Slickrock Trail in march and then Fruita CO. last month. The bike handles very well. It has taken mild trail bobble jumps,and a recent tip over off a cliff ledge with me attached...... If you want a great XC TRAIL BIKE, that is light and fast, easy on the hills. Buy it. But buy it for what it is for, It is not a downhill bike and if you ride it for the wrong reasons, You'll brake it........

I don't think the bike is that light for an XC racing machine, 27.4 pounds. My frog link failed once and was replaced under warranty. My headset bearings failed just this week and weren't covered. The shop mechanic asked me if I had worked on the Lefty fork because he found a Helicoil in the spindle which holds the hub on. I never had it apart. I just sent Cannondale an email to answer that one. My eggbeater pedals broke and were repaired by Crankbrothers under warranty. And the amount of travel stated in the specs is 110mm but the actual is 88mm.

This bike rocks. It climbs better than anything I have ridden except the hardtail. I just did a race today with it and I made me faster on the climbs on the course. What the guy said about being twitchy on the downhill this is a xc race bike it is made to be twitchy for handling. I have not experienced any more twitchyness than any other xc racing machine that I have ridden. this bike will make you a faster rider just by getting on it. BUY THIS BIKE!

Extremely unreliable. In two years: 3 front fork re-builds and two broken rear stays, all with fairly minimal riding. Very sketchy riding downhill. Twitchy front end which seems to lose [front] traction easily. Short travel rear end will 'pogo stick' once you have blown through its limited [65 mm] travel.

I have ridden pretty much all types of rides and the scalpel BLOWS them out of the water! This bike is the best for anyone looking at full suspension and wants to race. It preforms up to all tasks, climbs like a goat, descends like a...well something that goes downhill FAST. The geometry is spot on, and the combo of Sram derailluers and Avid juicy brakes is just sweet! All in all the best bike I have owned PERIOD, and that is saying something. The only changes I have made to the bike from stock are the grips (ODI OURY lock ons), the seat (serfas Ti), and I do have a set of tubeless race wheels. I ride the stock wheels for training and just swap out for races, other than that nothing changed...simply a great bike!!

I'm an engineer so I spent a ton of time looking at specs of the competition and test riding. It only took one test ride on the Scalpel and I pretty much made up my mind. Immediately it responded with quick acceleration and smooth riding. It wasn't as plush of a ride as the Maestro suspension from Giant, but the speed more than made up for that. Plus the lower weight made the bike feel feather light compared to the competition. It took a while to get used to the feel of the Lefty but I love it now. I recommend this bike for anyone who's looking for a sweet ride that'll make your friends turn their heads. It's well worth the money.

These are minor, but the Lefty poses a few logistics problems- Mounting a computer (you need to buy or fashion an adapter) and Transport (leave the front wheel on or remove the brake caliper)
I have been eyeing the Scalpel for about a year now, and finally overcame my doubts about the Lefty. Rode it, bought it, LOVE IT! Smooth travel, 110mm of rock chewing squish, easy lockout if you need it, tracks better than the RS Indy on my hardtail ever did (not that that means much). Rear end is tight with no perceptible pedal bob, but enough movement to smooth the rocks. The 2.7 inches in back is good for me and keeps the tire down on the tough climbs without eating away power from the strokes. Not the bike for everyone, though. I ride XC, have no intentions of jumping or downhilling on this bike, and would not recommend it for you if that's what you do. I checked out quite a few bikes, but finally decided that, for my type of riding, this was the perfect fit. I'd rate the value set pretty high for the components, even considering the price tag. I was a bit leary of the SRAM X9 derailleur and X7 shifters, being a Shimano user, but after a bit of re-training for my hands, they are great! I have less trouble shifting on the climbs, very quick and quiet transitions. The Avid Juicy 7's are awesome, with huge stopping power but adjustability to let me feather off some speed slowly. Made in the USA!!!!!!

OK, after selling my Cannondale F4000 I wasn´t sure if the next step was full suspension. After months of asking other Scalpel owners if they were satisfied with it I finally bought one and I'm ABSOLUTLY happy with the ride. The only drawback was that my former bike was in the 22lbs. range and the stock scalpel was about 26.5lbs. So I swap the standard Lefty for the top of the line carbon Fox Inertia...awesome fork, no need to worry about locking out the fork! Next thing I did was going for Sram X-0, sorry shimano, this thing rocks! Finally I changed handlebars and seatpost for the new Race Face Next Carbon (nice stuff). Added new tires (Maxxis TT) and finally got a 24lbs racer for about $2000 less than the Team Replica. If you can afford one this is the bike that rules, if you like to go fast and race (not for freeriding). Also the Fox RP3 shocks works excelent, almost no pedal bob.

Smooth stable ride, but with extremely precise steering due to the lefty, this is the second C-Dale bike I have owned with the lefty it rocks. You just can't say anything bad about Magura Marta brakes I just put a pair of Marta SL's on a new Indy Fab steel Hardtail they are awesome. If you ride or race XC in New England style conditions you can't do any better period.

It is great, enough travel on both ends for endurance racing but not heavy. The small well controlled travel on the back has really helped my climbing on loose surfaces
Weaknesses:
The lefty has lost air and either collapsed completely or partially four times. The shop / warranty guys cannot find a problem so they replace parts but it keeps happening. I am about 95kg but my SID fork has done well for 5 years and never had a problem. It is a super light race fork with air springs so the much stronger lefty should be able to cope with the XC riding I do. Bike has been in shop 4 times for 7 weeks of the 3.5 months I have owned it. Has anyone else had similar problems?

A huge step up from my hardtail. I am a very average rider, my only strenght is ability to mash short climbs. I'm much faster on this bike, really improved my cornering and also helped with climbs. Also, I'm much better on technical sections much to my surprise. Not plush, but was not designed to be plush so don't be disappointed. I really like the X7 shifters. If you ride only XC and don't have to have high end(XTR)componetry, buy it. The weight is not a problem for the riding I do and you could race this bike. The RP3 ProPedal really works, you can tell a difference in the 3 settings. A great bike, I'm glad I bought it.

Weight, warranty, carbon fiber + Aluminum +Ti, strong value for the dollar, parts spec is very high end for a mid level Scalpel, frame is identical to the team issue at half the price, (=upgradeable), great finish (welds & paint are beautiful to look at) Awesome paintjob, the 2005 Scalpel 1000 is a copper metallic bronze and black blend that is hand pinstriped like a showbike. Has just enough travel for a former HT racer; comes with decent pedals, great info/support/manuals online.
Weaknesses:
Not inexpensive, house brand handle bar & seatpost had to go. . . limited production/backorder can make this model difficult to find, undermarketed product in my area of USA.

Bottom Line:
This bike is a joy to ride fast. Don't buy it if you want a long-travel fully cushioned plush sofa to gentle your way through the woods; this is a tight performance machine. Don't but it if you are looking for a downhill or North Shore trials bike. This bike is perfect for me coming from a race hardtail, it has made my times faster, and my long rides more comfortable. Great tight turning response from the Lefty, it is very responsive and tracks better than a standard steer-tube fork. Be ready for lots of questions or just jealous looks, and be ready to ride. The Lefty fork lockout is a breeze to use (I sometime commute on this bike) and the rear Fox ProPedal lockout (3 position) can be handled easily without looking. This model does not have the remote lockout feature, which I feel is an unnecessary item given the ease and simplicity of the manual lockout switching. Awesome paintjob, the 2005 1000 is a copper metallic bronze and black blend that is hand pinstriped like a showbike. I'm glad I spent a few extra $$$ and bought this great bike, every ride makes me more certain I made the right choice buying it, it makes my soul smile inside; I just wish I had this bike years ago.

I think is one of the best Xc mountain bike in the world.I come from road so I think is the best option with a lock-out super fatty ultra fork when I go fast,and when I go "all muntain" double suspension is perfect,and Fox Rp3 is fantastic with 3 propedal positions.The rear suspension is fantastic with a superlative(by the moment) fox RP3.I think this bike is as light as other top hardtails but you are in the world of double suspension(I say this because in spain or other european countries people are fans of the "OLD DAYS OF MTB HARD TAILS").With bike like a Scalpel you have a better MTB than others like top custom hardtail.I think this year the rest of the components of the Scalpel are top quality as the price you pay por this bike and I ask myself why I have to change XTR pieces on my beautifull Scalpel 1000.If you are going to buy a new MTB take look at this bike in Team replica colour.
