Date Reviewed: August 24, 2008
Favorite Trail:Park Trails
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $280.00
Purchased At:Roberts
Strengths:
Good geometry. Easy to ride.
Weaknesses:Still trying out the saddle, though my butt is getting sore with just a few hours ride a day. Kinda heavy, though its weight could be a plus with its solid feel.
Similar Products Used:None. I ride a 12 speed race(road) bike. This is my first MTB.
Bike Setup:Stock, straight out of the box, I was told.
Bottom Line:Pretty good so far. I really enjoy riding this bike. I rode off-trail yesterday and no complaints. Yep, it's a bit heavy, but then, its weight gives it that solid feel. I would recommend this bike to others.

Submitted by mark a Downhiller from makaha oahu
Date Reviewed: October 24, 2006
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $189.00
Purchased At:mccully honolulu
Strengths:solid materials (iron), smooth ride
Weaknesses:a bit heavier than my diamondback (that was stolen in waianae town...always lock your bike up there). don't buy this bike if you can't lift it..get the "SE" version instead which is made from aluminum.
Similar Products Used:never had anything like it
Bike Setup:traditional as pictured with reg brakes and powered front light. matching kryptonite safety "U" bar with cable for the front wheel in grey and black.
Bottom Line:used for transportation, i live up in the mountains, and go downhill to the main freeway where i connect to a bike rack. oahu traffic is so congested on weekdays that you can get aroung quicker on bike to bus rack...clear cross island.
did makakilo drive in makakilo to connect to the bike rack on the bus in kapolei. makakilo drive is a significant downhill groove.
i had a secure feeling going down that mountain...suspension and brakes were magnificent, though i was a bit concerned about how fast i was going but will get a speedometre someday for that.

Date Reviewed: July 31, 2006
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $325.00
Purchased At:Goldcross
Strengths:Tough, reasonable weight, good all round bike.
Weaknesses:Grips and pedals weren't the greatest.
Similar Products Used:Merida Dakar, GT Avalanche 1.0
Bike Setup:Stock
Bottom Line:I had a boulder for 12 months, and used it to ride 30 km a day. It was reasonably quick, and very reliable. I never had any problems with it, and I only stopped using it when I got ran over by a car. The only damage was to the front forks and the front wheel. It was also good offroad on fire trails and similar types of tracks.

I'd recommend it as a good first mountain bike.

Date Reviewed: February 9, 2005
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $200.00
Purchased At:McCully Bike
Strengths:Battle ready- it got hit by 2 cars and never had a problem.
Weaknesses:weight. I'll say it again.. weight. Had a lot of shifting quirks.
Bike Setup:stock with new seat (not cause the old one was bad, but because it got stolen), end bars, and rear rain/mud fender.
Bottom Line:The bike was great for a beginner- it was my first mountain bike and the first bike I'd ridden since I could drive. the weight got to be a big problem when trying to take long day trips with friends. Also the shifting was difficult-maybe just cause I didn't tweak it enough-but the chain fell off a lot. I felt ready to upgrade after a year, then it got stolen and here I am!

Date Reviewed: November 11, 2004
Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $250.00
Purchased At:Aggieland cycle
Strengths:Price, reliability, comfort, looks, GIANT logo, sturdy
Weaknesses:Weight, fork, grips!
Similar Products Used:Custom built,
Bike Setup:Stock, except ODI Lock on grips and a flat alum. handle bar
Bottom Line:I love this bike! Being that the last bike I owned was a Huffy, this bike is amazing. The only problem I have had is that it is that I have a some trouble bunny hopping as compared to my neighbor's custom built bike, due to weight and the handle bars bent on my first big jump. The grips are to be hated for their lack of staying on (maybe I just hate ordinary grips). But I love this bike and the extra reach shimano gear has been a life saver in mud and steep hills.

Favorite Trail:one day, I'll know
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $219.00
Strengths:Steel frame is still light, nice paint job, fast & responsive shifting, comfortable ride (on long or short rides).
Weaknesses:short time with it, so none.... yet....... well, suspension has minimal adjustment, but then again, this was the bottom of the ladder among Giants... we'll see.
Bike Setup:stock
Bottom Line:I've cycled for fun forever, but not seriously about bike/gear until now. Although, I am one of those fellas with budget issues, so I started out with this Giant Boulder. In this price range, I was between a Fuji Boulevard, a GT (forgot which GT), a Diamondback Outlook, and this Giant Boulder. The other bikes in this price range look and feel much cheaper. I was told by other shops that the components with this particular bike, was about as good as it will get in comparison, and the quality of Giant is among the best generally, whether low-end, or more expensive ones. What got my interest the most, was that there were multiple salesmen, who had alot of good things to say about Giant, even though those two didn't carry Giant in their shops. So I went to the nearest dealer and got hooked up! It's been a sweet ride so far. I look to upgrade to another Giant someday in the future as my dedication/loyalty to biking will dictate.

Submitted by Andy Flippen a Weekend Warrior from Athens, GA
Date Reviewed: February 8, 2004
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $230.00
Purchased At:Sunshine Cycles
Strengths:Very affordable and very solid. I am new at biking and needed something that was fairly cheap to get me across campus to class. This bike has not only provided me with transportation, but also given me great exercise and a new perspective on biking for recreation and exercise. I have had it offroad for a limited time and was actually pleased with the results. I definitely recommend this bike.
Weaknesses:The frame is a little heavy, but I just chalk that up to more exercise for me. The front shock is the only real complaint I have. It bottoms out more easily than other bikes I looked at, but the price was great and the shock can be changed for a relatively cheap price. I still recommend this bike for entry level use.
Similar Products Used:Jamis entry level(can't remember model), Specialized entry level
Bike Setup:21 speed, Shimano V-brakes and shimano Altus gears. 19" frame, front shock.
Bottom Line:I have thoroughly enjoyed this bike and the bike shop I purchased it from threw in free tune-ups and maintenance for the life of the bike. With that, I really don't anticipate the bike breaking down anytime soon. Great bike, great buy!
