Strengths:triple-triangle frame, brakes, forks
Weaknesses:rear derailleur, pedals, seat
Similar Products Used:Giant XTC 2, Giant Yukon
Bike Setup:still stock
Bottom Line:Good budget bike for casual riders or weekend warriors and has potential upgradability for serious riders, lots of stability on the trails and in the city. I plan on replacing the rear derailleur with a Shimano XT, will change my pedal pegs and eventually will pick up Avid BB7 brakes. The shifting is a tad clunky and I think the derailleur is to blame, otherwise there's no problems, and I put a gel seat cover over my seat which helps a lot on long rides.

Weaknesses:Seat

Bottom Line:For a $500 bike I wasn't expecting to much. I purchased it for commuting and riding at some of the smoother local trails to help keep me in shape. On my first ride, it completely blew me away. I have been riding full suspension bikes for about 10 years now and this bike set me at ease. Very responsive feel from the cockpit, motors up climbs with ease, descends very well, and has great manners when taken to the air (nothing huge, just things that you would find on most xc/am trails). The suntour XCR-LO fork actually works (quite well), the preload adjustment works and so does the lock out lever. Coming from riding my Yeti ASX (worth around $3700) for the last 2 years, I am pleased to have found such a Gem for such a small amount of $$$.

Weaknesses:cranks, pedals, derailer.
Similar Products Used:CCM Heat

Bottom Line:Has a really good feel on the trail, suspension is set up nice . A bit heavy and assembled by a monkey. Both cranks have come loose and the left one damaged the inner gear because I stupidly rode for a mile with it wobbling(hey I was miles from home with no tools ok). Should have steel on BOTH parts(spline and crank) and should have reverse threads on bolt so it doesn't come loose. Brakes rubbed a bit at first but wore in after a while and feel good now. Derailer is a bit clunky and loud and just seems crude but gets the job done. Overall a good bike for the price and feels really good on the trail. If you are thinking about buying it though carry an allen wrench for the cranks or you'll mess them up like I did if they come loose.

Strengths:Excellent frame
Weaknesses:RST Omega Fork
Mechanical disc brakes require continual tweeking
Wheel hub bearings got killed by a couple of muddy rides
Similar Products Used:Older GTs, Carrera hardtail of some kind
Bike Setup:2006 frame in matt black

LX chain
LX cassette (9 speed)
LX hollowtech II cranks
DMR V8 pedals
Deore derailleurs
XTR gear cables (best things ever!)
Bottom Line:Good starter bike, but I wish I'd spent a little more in the first place on a higher specced bike as I've pretty much changed everything on it since I got it 18 months ago. To be fair, at the time I wasn't sure how serious I was going to be at mountain biking so didn't want to spend too much, but now ride 3 times a week plus some weekends.

If you're looking for something suitable for a first timer, then it's perfect. But once you become more advanced, you'll find a lot of the components will need changing. However, as the frame is a good one, it'll take the new bits just fine :o)

It is a bit heavy, but the way I ride, it doesnt make a difference (just if you have to carry it over your shoulder). I keep up with expensive bikes just fine and chuckle at the amount of money some guys spend on bikes that my 500 GT can do just as well. It looks cool, and is a monster on the trails. Duration Product Used:1 Year
Price Paid: $400.00
Purchased At:eBay
Strengths:Moderately light frame, good design for a hard-tail. Handlebars once you get them adjusted properly. Value for money. Disk-brake posts (mine is the w/disk model). Deore rear derailleur
Weaknesses:mediocre seat. Crap pedals. Suntour front derailleur is garbage. Hard to find new pads for Tektro disk brake pads
Similar Products Used:KHS Montana
Bike Setup:(2005 Avalanche 2.0 w/ Disk model) Michelin TransWorld City tires, Nashbar tubes, bar ends teflon brake cables & pedals, Schwinn bar grips (Cat ate the originals not a month after I bought it) 2006 Avid BB7 Disk brakes, NiteHawk Dual Pro lighting system, lots of reflective tape. Generic seatpost rack & Nashbar deluxe trunk bag
Bottom Line:Was looking for a bike I could use to commute to work with, as well as play around with on the weekends. For the price, I couldn't beat the deal on this bike.

The first thing I did was replace the stock nobby tires with semi-slicks for better road riding. After a year, I wore them down and replaced them with the VERY fast rolling and VERY responsive Michelin tires. Will definately stick to similar tires. However, once I pick up more off-road riding I may invest in a second set of wheels to use the old nobbies on again.

I'm generally pretty hard on bikes, so the troubles I've had with it I can only equate to my own abuse. However...

The first month, the handlebars kept coming loose. My own faul though, I found I hadn't installed them properly when I assembled it.

First two months, all four reflectors fell off of the pedals, after that the pedals started falling apart. Resin pedals and me don't get along too well, so I replaced them with alloy platforms from nashbar. Will be replacing those with clipless pedals soon.

About 6 months after riding to and from work every day, I snapped the chian. As in literally sheared a link off. Replaced with a new Nashbar chain. A month after that, the "quick-link" popped out. Replaced it with a solid link and has been fine since.

The Tektro Aquilla brakes were OK for about the first few months. Once the pads wore down, I had the devil's own time adjusting them properly. Eventually, I neded up loosing a brake pad. Finding it hard to source replacement pads, I ordered a set of Avid BB7's, and replaced the system. Best $120 I ever spent on the bike.

The Suntour front derailleur is absolute trash. Can't keep it adjusted for more than a month. The chain keeps popping off of the 3rd sprocket because the bracket is pushing it too far over. No matter how much I adjust. Also, in order to change sprockets, you have to be under absoltely zero load, or going down hill. Which makes no sense.

I mostly use it for commuting to and from work, so, it's off-road worthyness is untested at this time. I don't like the feel of road bikes, prefer something a little more "beefy". I can handle the 2 mile ride from my house to work in about 15 minutes, including climbing some pretty stiff hills. Disk brakes are great for decending those same hills on the way home at 11PM at night.

If you're a hardcore stump jumper, or do some major trail riding this isn't the bike for you. If you're just playing around on easy to moderate trails, this should serve you well.

Great value for money and once you get some decend pedals it can tackle anything. I do downhill, dirt jump, trials, everything on this bike and it has suited me well, and does better than more expensive / full suspension bikes! only the forks have gone wrong lately.

a fantastic bike, I highly reccommend it, but buy some pedals, and if you can, some new forks, it will make things much better/eaiser for you, but you'll have no trouble if you use it for XC like you're supposed to!

Strengths:Great frame, Tektro Aurega Comp hydraulic disc brakes, Truativ cranks, Shimano Deore/Rapidfire 21 gear setup, Alex rims, Suntour 100mm XCR shock (design under license from Marzocci according to the shop mech)
Weaknesses:crap pedals, slow product support here in Australia (getting better)
Similar Products Used:Test rode 2007 Trek, Norco and Giant with similiar price point. Owned GT Avalanche 2 (2005)
Bike Setup:mainly standard
Bottom Line:Front shock has lockout and rebound adjust - seems to be better suited for riders around 75kgs and lighter. Fatties might have to upgrade by inserting stiffer spring. I've replaced the crap pedals with a basic Shimano set and upgraded the GT handlebar stem to 130mm to give me extra length on the uphills. Even though it weighs around 13-14kgs with the classic GT hardtail frame, It handles like its been set up for the XC riders. Confident downhills and responsive at speed. And the hydraulic disc brakes are great on a bike of this price! I ride this bike every day at the moment in and around the city, and on weekends I swap the tires and head to the dirt, it works well on both for me. This bike would suit eager entry level riders keen to get amongst it, through to intermediate riders on a budget.

Favorite Trail:local made along yarra trail
Duration Product Used:6 months
Price Paid: $420.00
Purchased At:Ivanhoe Cycles
Strengths:Good frame looks, with slightly warped downtube, black finish and rear triangle design, gold coloured stem braket.

tough strong frame for a hardtail, could even do some downhilling
Weaknesses:heavier than it looks, a medium size was 15kg

RST omega forks, good rebound but easily bottoms out
Slight trouble with deore rear derailleur, probably due to lack of maintenance
Bike Setup:truative isoflow cranks, deore rear, alex rims, tektro disc brakes
Bottom Line:I bought this bike because it was on sale and badly needed a standard mtb for weekend trail riding...

I don't do 12/24 hour races but I'm no slouch either as I mainly do road.

In all, I bought it based on looks and price, I'm not component paranoid as I believe in the motto 'pedal harder' if you want a faster bike...

Ultimately not a good bike for XC as it is quite heavy 15kgs, The forks are reasonable if you want to push it hard on trails as the rebound is good, although it bottoms out so easily. There's a 80-120mm travel change, although on the fork itself it says 80-100mm

Cable disk brakes aren't the best, but they are still work fine, I mean I don't want to be one of those mtb tosers who are more about components then about how you ride.

Could always get lighter wheels to dramatically improve the bike.
Tioga factory x tyres are only usefull in the wet and mud as they are sooooo knobly.. recomend semi sliks or semi knobly?? (the ones where's it's knobly on the side)

CONCLUSION:
You can ride hard and fast on this bike, even though it's in the middle to lower of the range.
It's a bike for riders who do trail riding on weekends and want something affordable and would make them fast with more emphasis on their skills than components...not for xc racing or enduros
