Bike Setup:Deore LX front and rear derailleurs and hollowtech crank, Rock Shox Pilot SL forks, Deore 9 speed shifters and brake levers, Shimano Clipless pedals, Larsen TT Tires,Upgraded to Shimano Deore Mechanical Disk Brakes and Mavic X139 Rims
Bottom Line:Well, I'm new to XC riding and I started out with a KHS Alite 300. After a few months on that I became completly hooked on the sport and have decided to begin racing recreationally, and to that end I purchased this bike.
So far I absolutely love it. It's light and quick and will allow me to climb almost effortlessly. This bikes suites my riding style to a "T". Lots of trails with moderate drops (maybe a foot or two), lots of climbing and bumpy descents with areas to really open up on pedal on. I can't seem to find any flaws in the bike. There are one or two minor shifting problems that I think will be solved with a return to the dealer. I'd say all in all the bike was a great purchase. In total, with the brake, rim and hub upgrade I paid $1275 Canadian which comes to around $850-900 US...a bargoon I'd say.

Date Reviewed: August 10, 2003
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $620.00
Purchased At:The Pedaler
Strengths:Pretty much everything, Got the bike on sale for $615.00, and for what it's got you could easily pay $800 +. I did alot of research on bikes and forks, this bike with the Pilot SL fork is kick a!!.
Weaknesses:The only thing at this point that I might change is the seat. Feels like I got a strip of leather up my a!! when I ride.
Similar Products Used:Tried Trek, Specialized, Giant.
Bike Setup:Stock. Total LX drivetrain; RockShox Pilot SL; Deore hubs, brakes, levers, shifters and LX cranks (hollowtech). Alex double wall rims and Maxis Larson TT tires. Sweet!!
Bottom Line:You won't find a better bike at this price even if you add $200-$300. If your just starting out or getting back into the swing of things this is the perfect bike. I did alot of research on bikes/forks and this seemed like a great bike. I haven't ridden in about 12 years (lots of changes)so it took a little getting used to aluminium frames, suspension and especially clipless pedals. The frame looks good and rides great, the fork is great after some adjustments. It felt a little soft (fork) at first so I pumped up the air to about 10-12 psi (I weigh 170lbs / 6ft tall) and turned the rebound up and BAM, perfect. And if you've never used clipless pedals before get ready for some falls. Enjoy the ride..

Duration Product Used:3 months
Price Paid: $800.00
Purchased At:Colorado Springs Bike Shop West
Strengths:Light and strong frame. Nice crank set. Good shifting. Strong wheelset. Maxxis Larsen tires roll very fast. The Rock Shox Pilot SL fork seems to take whatever I dish out.
Weaknesses:Swapped the stock saddle for a Selle Italia Flite saddle.
Similar Products Used:'98 Raleigh M50.
Bike Setup:Shimano Deore LX derailers and crankset with Deore shifters, hubs, and brakes. Titec bar and stem. Shimano clipless pedals. Alex double wall rims and Maxxis LarsenTT tires.
Bottom Line:A great bike if you're into cross-country riding. Light, strong and stiff frame. Light fork with adjustability from 80mm to 100mm of travel. This bike is light and fast. The component specs are nice for this price range. Five Flamin'chiles!
