    Favorite Trail:fireswamp
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $2000.00
    Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:This frame is very strong, and has good geometry for all around freeriding. Manuals easy and is very good on drops and technical terrain. This has also been a very reliable bike.
Weaknesses:After so much time of riding this bike I really don't think it has any real weaknesses. It has never held me back from trying things. However, it does have break jack and is not the lightest bike out there.
Similar Products Used:santa cruz bullit, heckler, blur 4X, cannondale gemini, haro X3
Bike Setup:marz DJ1, alez DH wheels, kona kooka cranks, hayes disc brakes
Bottom Line:This is an excellent freeride bike, it excels for everyone from huckers (just want the NWD series to see what the stinky line is capable of) to agressive trail riders. I have seriously enjoyed this bike and have never had any problems. I have personally rode this bike on terrain varying from the rampage site in Virgin, Utah, to dirt jumps, to cross country in the canyon by my house and it has been great for it all.

    Favorite Trail:Mine
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $900.00
    Purchased At:Wheel World (Frame only)
Strengths:Frame is solid, and when the Fox Vanilla RC is adjusted right, it takes what you can dish, and prvides a good platform for sprinting.
Weaknesses:So far, I have found none.
    Similar Products Used:DaBomb Mindbomb...PlaneX Ridgeback....
Bike Setup:Full Custom. '04 primo frame, '05 Boxxer Team, Diabolous bar and stem, HFX Nine's, Sram X7, Bombshell Switchit Wheelset, and Bombshell platforms. Evolve DH crankset.
Bottom Line:I have ridden this bike on my personal trail( http://photos.nsmb.com/browseimages.php?do=searchresults&searchid=16486 ), At Snowshoe Freeride Park, local dirt jumps and even a little urban in Athens, Ohio. Skinnies, Drops, Jumps, Rocks, Roots.....this frame has done it all, no complaints and no weaknesses. I would expect the frames from 2003 - 2005 to perform on par with one another, but shock choices can make a difference. But my bottom line is this....This is a great frame and depending on the setup, can handle most and terrain you can throw at it. Complete bike price is a little high if you ask me, but if you build it custom, you can meet or exceed the value of the parts spec. I have invested $3100 and would put it up against the $3500 stock bike any day.

Strengths:The Super T Pro was very plush and the 7' of rear wheel travel came in very handy. The frame is very strong and I havn't dented it yet. I've done a 30 foot drop and the bike handled it well. I've also done a 30 foot gap and it took it well. Great bike!
Weaknesses:The JS Grips suck and should be changed out right away. The JS pedals also aren't that good. I have bottomed out the super t pro a couple of times but thats about it.
Similar Products Used:Stinky, XTS Moto, Specailized Bighit.
Bike Setup:Mostly stock, Accept for 2.7 Maxxis tires , Azonis A-Frame Pedals, and ODI Grips.
Bottom Line:The bike comes very strong from the factory. The bike is overall the best freebike I have ever used and I have had about 6 others, but you bike is really only designed for freeride and downhill. This bike is not for a XC or cross country use.

Strengths:Strong Frame, Super Components overall, Cool Funky lookin color,
Weaknesses:Shifters, the shimano dual controls are not what i like so i opted for some sram rocket grip shifts to go with the shimano deraileurs.
Similar Products Used:None...... first Big Full suspension bike
Bike Setup:Stock except for Shifters, switched them to sram rockets, azonic hot seat, and a 2.4 specialized enduro pro tire in the rear, and odi ruffian lock on grips
Bottom Line:Great bike. Takes jumps, and drops with ease. Ive ridden it in the wilsons area where there is a good bit of climbing and its not that bad of a climber actually. Saint components rock, super t is great, beefy bar and stem, rims are tough as nails. Ive also done a few downhill races on it, and i took 2nd at a race on it. its not the best but thats what the stab primo is for. and this bike is for doin the big hucks. if you like kona, ride big, and got the money. get it you want regret it

Strengths:Nice Cranks these are bomb proof. Staints are pimp but remember to have resin pads and not CX pads.....OO you got ta love the Super T Pro that is a smooth smooth fork ... rims are indestructable even through my many millions of flat landings of 20 foots.....they will only bend a bit easy fix.....Fox Vanilla's are sexy ^_^
Weaknesses:Frame kinda sucks.....put a massive dent on side while in rock garden.....shifters really bad for dowhilling cause when you lean back and pull incorrectly on the brake you will shift....grips need a change....but thats it
    Similar Products Used:Stinky 04 (Beast w/ minior upgrades)...Coiler D 05 (sucks)
Bike Setup:Stock...except for Maxxis minions 2.7 on both wheels

Submitted by Mike a from K-Country, Alberta
    Date Reviewed: September 29, 2004
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Price Paid: $2750.00
Strengths:Bombproof frame (I hope). Perfect geometry (for me). Sweet, sweet components. Proven design time and time again (just ask Robbie Bourdon, Dave Watson, Joe Schwartz or Grant Allen, among others). Kona knows how to make solid bikes, especially the ones meant to go mostly downhill.

Apart from the lever issue (see below), the brakes on this bike are unbelievable, both in terms of power and modulation. They absolutely destroy Hayes HFX9's or Mags (as do my lowly Deore hydros with 6 inch rotors, on my Bear).
Weaknesses:Kona JS grips replaced with ODI's.

I'm still wrestling with the whole XT dual lever concept. I don't mind the shifting, but I still feel a bit nervous applying the brakes on fast, rough steeps since the brake levers have so much up and down play. I may end up replacing them with good old rapidfire shifters, but I'll at least give the XT's a chance first.

Kona's warranty still causes me some concern, although this is the 5th Kona I have bought, and I've never had a frame issue.

I'm not sure about the QR20. A simple bolt through axle might be stronger, and I don't think you save much time removing the wheel from a QR20 front end, since you still have to yank out the allen wrench.

I've bottomed out the Super T a couple of times on some flats. Not a big deal, but I should probably check the oil level and even considering replacing it with a higher weight. My rear spring (550 lbs.) seems about right so far.

Bike Setup:ODI grips. Lizard Skin chain stay protector. Everything else completely stock.
Bottom Line:For those who say that the Kona single pivot design causes brake jack and excessive pedal bob compared to the Specialized FSR rear end, and who claim to have sufficient riding experience with both, I raise the BS flag. In addition to the Kona's I've owned, I have 2 year's worth of riding an FSR with a Horst rear suspension, which of course is touted by all the magazines as being the sh#t. Although others may disagree with me, at least I speak from hands on experience. I'll take the Kona suspension setup over a drop or down a steep, over an FSR setup, any day. I don't notice any significant difference between the two pedalling uphill, although I use my tricked out Bear (also with single pivot rear end), and not my Stinky, for cross country riding. The Stinky is reserved for chair lift riding only. So far, I like.

Strengths:total every thing! what a bike for the money. all the saint stuff is so sweet, it just looks like it could take a beating. nice plush marrz forks aswell. the saint brakes are super powerfull, and the crank set is the strongest and widest i´ve ever seen.
Weaknesses:it´s not really a weakness, but i had to change the fork oil for some 10w and mess about with the oil height.
    Similar Products Used:stinky 03
Bike Setup:what do you need to change?
Bottom Line:finally shimano make some super strong kit that´s worth putting on the mega strong stinky frame. i can´t see how you could possible bust this bike now. it can handle every thing you can throw at it! the primo is some tool, the best free ride bike for the money, that´s for sure.
