Description:MTB cross-country riders and racers will appreciate the lightweight performance of this tough Maxtal SUP welded rim with double eyelets. Maxtal rim is 30% stronger than a 6106 aluminum rim. SUP means the rim joint is arc welded, then milled by digitally controlled machines for high resistance; no visible joint means clean braking. Ceramic technology reduces heat on the rim, provides resistance to wear, and reduces braking distances by 20% in dry weather and 50% in wet. CD adonization technology reinforces the oxide layer that forms on the aluminum profile surface for a greater micro hardness and resistance to wear. With UB Control, the sidewalls of the rim are milled on digitally controlled machines for efficient braking.

I am around 240 lbs most of the time (the rest over), and I ride xc, not too aggressively. I use hand built wheelsets only, the above were all put together by Whizz Wheels in Germany (tune Mig75es and Mag230es, 36holes/DT Competition spokes, I do NOT use the skewers from tune, but solid steel ones from Salsa, which have the same shine as the black tune hubs). There is where you get first rate hand built wheels that keep you going (something like that ominous "David" in US, I presume). The 517 rim was a bit flimsy for me, in comparision with the 521 one got the difference. The 618 is really just right for me, my weight and my style of riding. Never trued even once since I bought the wheels. The Ceramic stayed hithertoo where it should, braking properties still just right (the 521 Ceramic is a bit glossy now. In the wet these don't brake so well any more).

I am 6ft, 210lb no fear XC rider and cant believe the abuse this rim will take without breaking the sweat. Ceramic coating is like new after one full season of biking that included 24 hours of adrenaline event.

After the pads were ridden a couple of times and the ceramic was smoothed out a bit the braking noise went away, at first they were pretty loud.
I was concerned that the coating was going to flake off, as per reviews of other ceramic rims, but after riding the spring slop up here in the Great White North there is no signs of and wear at all. The coting really stops brake surface scoring that you get on regular alloy rims. I've had a coule of harrowing dings that I was sure was going to leave a mark but nothing yet.
The wieght isn't anything to write home about. Not too heavy, but not feather weight either. I am 6'1" and 190 pounds and these rims have taken me places that would have tacoed the 221's for sure.
I love them for XC riding! If anyone has had troubles with them please email me at the above!

Hit a rock so hard that I had a snakebite and
the rim was dented on one side but the wheel stayed
true (Sapim spokes). I bet a X517 or 221 would have
cracked.
The ceramic coating first became very smooth (should have cleaned it) and then flaked off when I rode some trails
with big loose rocks. Actually I only bought them because
my XT-Vs squealed like hell. Got Avids now and I'll buy
the non-ceramic version in spring. My rims won't last
longer than 2 years anyway, so what's the point in wasting

brakes squeal like a mofo initially, but a good smearing with mud soon resolves that, and then you can settle in to thrashing these things silly. or at least, trying to. short of wilfull destruction, the x618 can handle anything i've thrown at them, and they're still true! love these rims. | | Value Rating:Overall Rating: |

Definitely stiffer than the 217. Ceramic just is it, if you use rim brakes. Since I am rather heavy, I put low weight, but not ultra low weight things things on my bike, with preference of good function and durability. So I have had no problems at all, hitherto. Mavic's x618 match to this concept, as do the other two big Ms: Marzocchi and Magura. I loved them! they are simply the best. but not for the weightwatchers but there not too heavy.
