    Date Reviewed: October 14, 2006
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $700.00
    Purchased At:Island Tri & Bike (IT&B)
    Strengths:Strength and Weight
Weaknesses:?? There are none for me
Similar Products Used:Shimano R550 and R500 / Mavic Open SUP
Bike Setup:Felt F2C with Dura Ace
Bottom Line:These wheels are worth every penny to me and quite a bit more. After destroying four rear wheels after less than 1000 miles of use, I bought these wheels as a $100.00 upgrade from the Aksiums (how great of a deal is that?) with a new Felt and have done 3000 miles of hard training on the bike in the last six months. I am 6'4" and weighed 230 when I started (I now weigh 200) and have hit huge Honolulu pot holes quite a few times without affecting the wheels at all. I have climbed some of the 10 degree + hills around Oahu many times and have had the guys at IT&B tweek (I mean just "tweak") the rear wheel only once. I only needed a strong set of wheels but these are the bonus of being incredibly light as well. I would do it again in a second - Amazingly strong.

    Price Paid: $800.00
    Purchased At:panther cycles (aus)
    Strengths:light, smooth, fast once rolling...
Weaknesses:yeah the wheels look, but that where the good points end. very weak wheel set, i would rather a set from a k-mart bike
    Bike Setup:canonadale r 5000.2005 model.
Bottom Line:the bottom line. well i have been riding for some time now and i have never incounted a set of rims like this, total crap!! what is mavic spending there money? we all like to watch pros ride, and mavic says that the rides are testing the new produces while racing, give them a set of wheel and tell them to race a season on them and then hand them back too mavic for a good look.. i have to take my wheels in for straighting atleast twice a month.. rides please take note, these rims are not worth a cent, and will create more problems them they are worth....

Bottom Line:Cracks developed on the rim at the spoke threads. The fix is a new and expensive rim replacement. These are high end rims and should last longer. I am 150lb rider and I use these for recreational and commuting.

Strengths:Gives bike awesome look. Light, stiff, fast wheelset.
Weaknesses:Mavic customer service. Broken spoke after 1000 miles.
Similar Products Used:Open Pros, Rolf Vector Comps
    Bike Setup:Serotta
Bottom Line:Nice wheels for racing. Broke a spoke after 1000 miles of use. Couldn't ride home because wheel was so out of true. Sold them because can't trust them anymore. Bought King hubs laced to Open Pros. Now I am happy and worry free.

    Date Reviewed: August 4, 2004
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Purchased At:LBS
    Strengths:Light, fast, stiff, cool looking
Weaknesses:Not reliable. Proprietary spokes. Need special spoke wrench.
Similar Products Used:28/32 hole traditional wheels, high end
    Bike Setup:2003 C'dale R3000
Bottom Line:For the first 1150 miles I loved these wheels. They ran straight, never had to true them. Then today I was doing a big gear sprint (slightly downhill) and heard a pop and felt something give. Not a good feeling at 35 mph. When I came to a stop I noticed that one of the spokes on the rear wheel, left side (aka non-drive side), had popped off the hub. It didn't break or fail in any way, it just popped off the hub. I'm a light guy (160 lbs), not super strong, and I have good sprint technique -- bottom line, there is no reason why the spoke should have come off. I have no confidence in these wheels anymore.

    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $750.00

    Strengths:Rigidity while they last, weight
Weaknesses:failure under stress, weak bearing lub at purchase time
    Similar Products Used:Rolf Wheels
Bike Setup:Trek 5500 usps - dura-ace, ksyrium ssc, ssm era usps team edition saddle, vittoria open corsa 1.9
Bottom Line:I had extremelly good experiences in the last 8 months with my ksyriums - going uphill, downhill whatever, they were allways a set of wheels a person can trust.
But......this weekend while going uphill my rear rim broke. It's amazing how can a high end (with a proportional price tag) can be broken so easily.
In this sense, I do not recommend this wheels for someone who is expecting to buy the best pair of wheels. They are good but they fail. I'm now waiting to check how portuguese distributor will handle this issue.

    Duration Product Used:6 months
    Price Paid: $900.00
    Purchased At:Melbourne Australia
Strengths:Mavic Kysrium SL's. Light, fast. look nice
Weaknesses:Reliability - cracks at spokes along rim in two places after just six months use - not impressed with poor endurance. I'm 85 kilo and moderately quick rider. These wheels should be better quality for the money.
Similar Products Used:Mavic Open Pro, Velocity, Zip 440's, Mavic CXP 30's
    Bike Setup:standard road bike
Bottom Line:Sorry guys, don't buy these wheels. While they seem to have a good reputation, I have found they don't last. Six months light to moderate use has ended up with a rear rim with two cracks eminating from both sides of two spokes. This kind of quality I expect from cheap Asian copies that fall off the back of trucks - not high priced Mavic product. At this rate I will need a new rim two times a year - not happy and will not buy or recommend Kysrium SL's again

    Date Reviewed: July 9, 2001
    Duration Product Used:1 Year
    Price Paid: $850.00
Strengths:Stiff, strong, light, perfectly round, stays true. Skewer action especially good. Very little maintenence, but I've never crashed them.
Weaknesses:Expensive, but you get what you pay for.
    Similar Products Used:Spinergy
Bottom Line:These are the best wheels I've ever owned, and I been racing for 20 years. Didn't like the Spinergy's, because they weren't perfectly true, not stiff enough, and heavy, but these wheels are fabulous! Very easy to adjust out any hub play. They convey a sense of high qualilty, professional wheels. If you can afford them, get 'em.

    Date Reviewed: March 20, 2001
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Strengths:rear-wheel stiffer than first asumed
    Weaknesses:expensive
    Similar Products Used:many conventional wheels
    Bike Setup:c'dale r2000
Bottom Line:This is a follow-up of my earlier review, it seems that the rear-wheel had some play in the bearings wich was helped in a second and now it's stiff enough.
A few weeks ago i crashed in the sprint of a classic, three spokes in the front wheel were damaged en wheel was bent, after inserting three new spokes(in one week delivered)it was as new.
After the next competition my rear wheel wasn't true anymore, but like a conventional wheel it was straight after bringing some more and less tension to a few spokes.
So i'am very pleased with the wheels and they also look nice!

    Date Reviewed: March 2, 2001
    Duration Product Used:3 months
    Strengths:relatively stiff, very light, durable
Weaknesses:rear-wheel a little bit to flexy for my kind of racing(i'm 85kg and quite strong). And IF they break, then you have to send them back to mavic.
Similar Products Used:conventional wheels, chorus, ultegra, tune, hugi, with high and low rims
    Bike Setup:stock cannondale r2000 model 2001
Bottom Line:Got it from my sponsor, use it as competition wheelset, raced about 1000km with it, they are durable(richard groenendaal, one of the best cyclocrossers of the world, also races with them, and he has got a couple of bikes each more expensive then your car...) As light as helium, but much more durable en better aerodynamic's, looks cool also, an good alround wheel. I can recommend it to everyone who is under 80kg, and non racers under 100kg. The bearings are also very smooth. A bit expensive, but not too expensive if you want good wheels

    Weaknesses:Not cheap.
    Similar Products Used:Rolf Vector Pro's
    Bike Setup:Colnago/ campy
Bottom Line:Just a great set of wheels. They are lighter and climb better then Rolf's. Also have the durability of the Rolfs. I have had lots of wheels and its not easy to notice the difference between hign end wheels, but you will with these. Worth the price

    Date Reviewed: February 27, 2000
    Favorite Trail:any one outside
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:Light weight, stiffness, they look cool, they roll smoothly and quickly.
Weaknesses:None yet except the price and wheel magnet setup.
Similar Products Used:Mavic CXP21's with Ultegra hubs.
Bike Setup:Trek Y-Foil with Ultegra group and Michelin Axial Pro's.
Bottom Line:The wheels seem super stiff like Rolf's except they are lighter. There seemed to be a noticeable difference in acceleration from my old wheels, maybe because they weigh half as much. They look really cool with the new Michelin Axial Pro black tires. There didn't seem to be excessive vibration or harshness from the road even though they feel stiff and strong. Long term durability is unknown at this point, but they seem pretty sturdy for their weight. I'll post again after a couple of thousand miles or so on them with further impressions. If you can get a decent price, I would reccommend them. You can probably build a custom pair for less, but you won't have the light weight, good aerodynamics, and technology for less.

Submitted by Art a Cross-Country Rider from Adirondack Mtns., NY
    Date Reviewed: December 9, 1999
    Duration Product Used:
    less than 1 month
    Strengths:
-- Light as Helium's but much stiffer; lighter than Rolf Vector Pro's, etc.
Bottom Line:This is just a pre-lim statement, as I haven't had a chance to ride these yet - I'm still waiting for my frame!
I just received these 3 days ago. Then I find out that the new Campy 10 speed (Record/Chorus) cassette won't fit the freehub. Shimano 9's pop right on, and the Mavic M9 cassettes for Campy will work. What a pisser!
I called Mavic. Their blurb is that they're working on a 10 speed series of cassettes compatible with Campy. But no ETA was given, natch. Then, a friend at a bike shop called them. Mavic told him they're not going to make a 10 speed cogset for 2000. They're going to let Shimano come out with it (Mavic says Shimano is working on a 10 speed themselves(?); and they hope the new Shimano cogs will work with the Campy 10's. HUH???
Since when does Shimano make a part to accomodate Campagnolo? Probably not in MY lifetime! Apparently, there is alot of BS being spewed by everybody, and who know's what to believe? And it looks like Mavic's famous French arrogance is still going strong.
They look like they could be a great set of wheels, except I'm concerned about durability/ruggedness. If you want to run a current 9 speed set up, you're Ok. But if you want to go for the new Record 10 (as I do), maybe you should wait to see which story that Mavic tells will actually become reality.
