Strengths:Awesome geometry, great climber, light, lean and acurate.
Weaknesses:Low BB height, other bikes clear better rocks and roots.
Similar Products Used:K2, GT, Jamis Dakar
Bike Setup:Fox suspension is great, get a pump since pressure does escape after a few weeks.
Bottom Line:From day and night with all my older bikes, light, geometry makes climbing a plesure you can easily stand and pedal up in very confortable position and great balance. Switchback are a pleasure and you always in control. Just one low point maybe Specialized takes not but the ground clearance on the BB feels like an inch lower than most other bikes I have ridden so I end up hiting a few sharp rocks or edges of sharp ramps or obstacles.

    Purchased At:RocknRoad Cyclery, Mission Viejo
    Strengths:almost everything
Weaknesses:pedals, Fox Triad is known for bad seals, takes 3-4 weeks to get it fixed!
    Similar Products Used:Kona Cindercone HT
Bike Setup:Stock except for replaced mech disc brakes for Juicy 5 hydraulic disc brakes. Fox float 120 fork, fox triad shock, Lx/Xt drivetrain.
Bottom Line:I wanted to wait a year before reviewing this bike. After twelve months of riding 2-3 times a week, I must say this bike absolutely rocks for the price. First of all it is lighter than my last hardtail and even climbs better. There is definitely some bobbing when climbing but it's not aweful and when you get to the top of the hill you can bomb it downhill! Superb handling and very snappy. I've recently played around with the rebound settings and have found another level in my riding. I absolutely reccommend this bike to anyone looking to get a FS. Only problem I had was a defective rear shock. I also changed out the disc brakes. Mechs worked great but I was just looking for some extra stopping power. FYI: I'm 5'7" and weigh 165 lbs.

Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Price Paid: $1400.00
    Purchased At:Bike Hampton
Strengths:Price, and the first 6 months. A cush ride that soaks up bumps and feels good even after a long day's ride. Predictable handling.
Weaknesses:In the last 3 years I've replaced because of failure - the rear wheel, the rear cogs, the front cogs, the rear derailer, the chain twice, the cranks, the shock, and worst off all, in the last four months both the top chain stay broke (because the derailer broke and took part of the frame with it) and the bottom chain stay literally snapped in two. Let's be clear, I'm 190, 5'9 and ride twice a week. Yes, I ride hard but I'm not freeriding. All of the parts wearing and breaking are one thing, but the frame cracking once and snapping in two the second time are unacceptable, and I'm done with Specialized now. The bike rode very well and I've had many good times with it, but at the end of the day, I've lost confidence in this product. It's an 04 model and I bought it in 05.
Similar Products Used:Klein Attitude Comp, Ellsworth Truth
Bottom Line:Probably a good buy if you are planning some upgrades, and are literally not jumping at all and like to think of your bikes as leases not buys. If you like to play around and jump logs every chance you get, this might not be the bike for you. Everything rode well until catastropic failure. I could have been killed. I'm ditching the bike because I'm concerned next up is the front triangle, which would be much worse.

    Favorite Trail:Too many to list
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
    Price Paid: $1699.00
    Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Awesome climber, no pedal bob. Lighter than my old hardtail! Eats bumps, rear suspension helps bike stay planted through rough stuff. Super fast and nimble.
    Weaknesses:Shimano Pedals
Low BB? Hit pedals on rocks a couple of times - could just be rider skill (or lack there of!)
Similar Products Used:Nothing similar to compare too -- only an '01 Schwinn Moab Disc w/ Thudbuster seatpost -- otherwise only Demo'd other FS bikes on road (i.e., Cake, FSR XC, Enduro, Trance, Reign, NRS, VT, Jekyll, Yeti 575)
Bike Setup:Stock '06 Stumpjumper FSR 120 - swapped out pedals for Time ATAC Zs
Bottom Line:This is a great all around FS bike. Not for downhillers, this is more of an all mountain, free-ride, cross country bike (multi-use!). The harder you ride this bike, the more it likes it! The Fox Float RL fork and the Fox Triad shock both have lock out, but the bike is so efficient you don't need to lock them out when climbing.
The Avid Mechanicals (8" rotor in front) have plenty of stopping power and require less maintanence than hydraulics (I don't care about the marginal extra weight of mechanicals).
This bike floats through most anything in front of it, it is an awesome, confidence building machine!

    Price Paid: $1500.00
    Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Lightweight, well built, looks sweet esp. in gray, a lot of bang for the buck, takes a beating and wants more, quality components, it is a Stumpjumper.
Weaknesses:Wish it came with hydraulic discs instead of mechanical discs (although the mechanical discs work very well), the Specialized tires are not the best.
Similar Products Used:All kinds of bikes
    Bike Setup:Pretty much '06 OEM
Bottom Line:For a full suspension bike, you cannot go wrong. The price you pay for the components you get is solid. The bike rides very well for XC racing and is also a legit all-mountain performer. I highly recommend this bike to anyone. Later,

Bottom Line:I have been riding a 2001 model Giant Iguana Hardtail and thought it was time to update to something a bit better. My brother in law and his mates all ride full suspension bikes and can't say enough about them. After taking the I drive and Reign for a test ride, I was less than impressed with full suspension bikes, but after riding the specialized, I changed my mind somewhat and decided to purchase one. To date I have been very impressed with the bike. It is lightweight, with no noticable bob and has a good aray of components. I have yet to take the bike on any epic rides, but as of this moment, I am very satisfied with my choice and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. After getting used to a full suspension bike, I don't think I could ever go back to riding a hardtail again.

    Favorite Trail:Switserland - Austria
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
    Price Paid: $2900.00
    Purchased At:Moving Store
Strengths:Strong rigid frame - easy 2 manage - great equilibrum
Weaknesses:Rear suspense mechanisme - Standard Brakes - Standard wheels
Bike Setup:Upgrade Mavic Cross Max XL - Upgrade Hayes Hydraulic Disc Brakes
Bottom Line:Was very pleased with this bike at the start. After a few weeks, I had every week some broken spokes. Bottom line: wheels to light for my weight (84 kg). Solution: Mavic Cross Max XL.
Standard V-brakes not strong enough for a bike with this potential. Solution: Hydraulic Disc brakes (Hayes).
In this configuration I was very happy (beside the fact of investing a lot of money after the purchase of a bike that should have been perfect) for a few months.
After one year the real problems started:
First, the bolt fixing the suspension was bent and needed replacing.
Some weeks later, all the moving parts (industrial layers) of the rear suspension system had to be renewed because they were worn out.
A few months later, the "bridge" (black connecting part just above the suspension) broke!
A few weeks after replacement (thank you specialized) the fixation axes of the suspension had to be renewed.
Before leaving to Austria, I had a complete maintanance of the bike. After 2 days cycling, I had 2 replace again 2 of the industrial layers of the mechanisme and noticed that the "bridge" was bent.
Accoring to a second opinion from a specialized dealer, this bike isn't suited for people over 80kg!
Total Conclusion: I'm very happy with this bike ... at the moments that it is in order!!!
I'm very pleased with the service from my dealer "Moving Store" in Gent (Belgium).
Planing to change this frame for the new FSR stumpjumper witch is stonger build.
Most of these reviews are written by bikers who owned there FSR less than 6 months. I would like to know if there are other owners with the same problems after ridding this bike a few years.

Purchased At:Bicycle Station, Cheyenne, WY, USA
Strengths:Strong frame in a relatively light overall package. Very sexy design that is more than competent functionally for the all around mountain package.
    Weaknesses:Rear cassette and chain wear.
    Similar Products Used:Virgin MTB biker
Bike Setup:Upgrade to Sun Rhyno lite rims, Avid cable disc-brakes, Shimano m760 rear cassette, Specialized Roll X Pro 2bliss UST tires with Stan's No Tube setup.
Bottom Line:I popped the MTB cherry with this bike in July '04 and have been riding part tarmac bike trail and part hard-pack MTB trails for close to 1500 total miles. Absolutely it is a more efficient bike than most others at or below its price point and I would dare say it gobbles up even some slightly more expensive Trek bikes I demoed.

Does good over bumps and tires grip well over most surfaces short of wet rock and mud. Gearing seems spot on and the upgraded disc brakes have plenty of bite. This bike seems very light in weight and does fairly well climbing hills for an 11-32 bike. The Tubeless tire conversion was well worth it and has made a big difference in reliability and traction. I'm a really bike rider at 6'1", 240lbs but I can pound this bike with confidence on any XC trail and most All-MT trails.

Replacement parts are not cheap (based on what I thought they would cost) and do seem to wear quicker than I expected. I have torn through a rear cassette and did wear a bit on the front sprocket. I probably could have changed out the chain quicker but I take REALLY good care of this bike (cleaning and lubricating) after every ride. This is perhaps the price you pay for a balanced bike (performance vs economy).

Overall a best bang-for-the-buck on quality entry-level MTB bikes. I would recommend a Stumpjumper FSR to anyone.

    Favorite Trail:My yard
    Duration Product Used:2 Years
    Price Paid: $1450.00
Purchased At:Some place in Santa Rosa
Strengths:Good XC bike, great on smoother and tighter trails
Weaknesses:Weak tubes, Manitou Black forks are worse than using a ridgid fork
Similar Products Used:Santa Cruz Superlight, Heckler, Ellsworth Truth
Bike Setup:Put on a FOX Talas (not great, but better than the Manitou), Kenda Nevegal's, XT
Bottom Line:I moved up to Nor Cal for a couple of years and had to sell my Bullit (no need for so much bike in Nor Cal), and couldn't afford to keep my Ellsworth Truth so I got a Stumpjumper. It is a fun bike for XC riding, climbs really well and the suspension is very efficient. It is fun in really twisty singletrack and likes buffed or very lightly tech trails. The big difference between it and my Truth is that the Truth went downhill like an All Mtn bike whereas the Stumpy feels like a XC bike on the downhills. Both climb about the same. Just don't push it too hard and you will like it.
I made the mistake of taking it to a intermediate trail with some moderate all mtn. style riding. The garbage Manitou fork broke, jamming up causing me to wreck. It wasn't even that bad of a digger but the whole rear triangle crumpled and I got a good sized dent in the frame. It seems like the tubing is thinner and more dent prone than my Santa Cruz bikes. I really have no business riding an XC bike, but I expected a little more durability from the stumpy. Specialized was quick to send me a new rear end and bearings ($120), but it was in a different color.
Bottom line- if you only ride easier singletrack and have absolutely no, and I mean NO, urge to go big, then the Stumpy is a fun XC rig that is priced pretty well.

    Purchased At:Incycle, San Dimas, CA
Strengths:Well made, good components, fun to ride, looks good, quality company with frame warranty.
Weaknesses:The tires. I don't like the Specialized Adrenaline Pros. I'm gonna get some Panaracer Fire XC Pros or maybe WTB tires for it as soon as these were out. I just don't think they grip the road very well. They don't bite in climbing like I would want and don't shed mud hardly at all.
Similar Products Used:Trek 830 Mountain Track
Bike Setup:Stock - well, sort of. I added some bar ends ('cause I like to use them!). Otherwise, it's the way it comes from the factory. Oh, wait, that's not true, I also flipped over the stem to give me more leverage climbing.
Bottom Line:I think this bike is cool. I love riding it. I've put over 400 miles on it in the last six months. I'm basically a beginner/intermediate rider and this bike does what I want. It's the first "real" mountain bike I've ever had. However, I can see and feel that it works well and does what it's supposed to. The gearing allows me to climb steep stuff (as long as my legs hold out) and go fast on the pavement when I want. The geometry seems good. If it weren't for the tires I'd feel great on it. The shocks on my bike are Fox, not what it says above. I got the Fox Triad as a rear shock which has three settings: Locked, Pro-Pedal (dampend but still a takes big hits) and Open (full boing!). It works very well, when properly loaded with air. The front shock is the Fox Float RL. It locks out, too. Both have at least 4" of travel. This bike is a great XC rig. It climbs and descends well. It's probably a better bike than I deserve at this point. :-) If I were going to upgrade, I'd get the tires first then look at new pedals and drivetrain. The components are XT and LX so they're pretty good but might be better and ligher if they were XTR. I'd also consider a Thomson seat post and Hope or Thomson stem. Other than that, I dig this bike. There might be better bikes out there, but this one is damn good and I think it's a proven company. Specialized seems to have a very good frame warranty. Overall, if you want a good full suspension bike that you can trust, I think this is it.

    Purchased At:Rented in Phoenix
Strengths:Light weight, good components, peddles great. Geometry makes for good x-country ride. Carves corners. Rear shock makes for a great peddle platform, with very little bob.
Weaknesses:Manitou Black fork is not very plush. I much prefer my Marzocchi MX Pro for damping response. 2.0 wide tires don't provide much traction on sandy trails (like in Phoenix). The long stem favors XC geometry
Similar Products Used:1998 Specialized FSR Sport
Bike Setup:Stock as I rented it from the bike shop
Bottom Line:I rented this bike for a day of riding during a recent trip to Phoenix. I rode on a pure cross country course, with no big drops or nasty downhills.

The bike carves corners really well, and is nice and light. The Fox peddle platform is the real deal. The bike climbs really well when you're out of the saddle hammering on it. The shock has a lockout, but I can't imagine needing it.

This bike was super fun on a tight, twisty, up-and-down course. If it were mine, I would upgrade the fork to the Marzocchi MX-Pro. I would also run a 2.4" front tire and a 2.25" rear if I could make it fit. Sure, it's more drag, but it's a light bike!! More traction for braking and corner carving in loose stuff would be very nice. I'd also opt for a shorter stem, but that's a personal preference.

Overall, good x-country bike for the money. This would make a good starter bike for sure. I would want to upgrade some components if it were mine.

Strengths:FSR rear end. This bike is very confidence inspiring. Easy to ride and the FSR does what it’s supposed to do.
Weaknesses:Low low bottom bracket. Every time the suspension compresses I knock my pedals. Although I have become a much better rider in the rock because of this weak spot in the over all geometry of the bike. Be careful pedaling around sharp corners or you’ll hit those darn pedals. I had a 2000 Enduro (when they were still the same frame as the stumpy with an adjustable link). That also had that same problem, but not as bad. I was hoping that Specialized would have corrected this problem.

Bottom Line:I have about 600 miles on the bike so far. Overall I’m pretty happy with is buy. I bought the bike mostly for the frame and new drive train and swapped out everything else. I like the ride and fit, although I’m starting to wonder if I should of got the large frame, (6’ on a M). But for the trails in MI, I can throw this bike around fairly easily, it has enough travel to keep my back happy, although probably too much for some trails around here. Its comfy, confident, modest I like it.
Would I buy another one? I don’t know at this point there are a lot of strong bikes out there.

My bike came with Sun Mach IV rims and they held up great. If they can take what Pisgah downhills have than they should be fine for our Michigan trails.
I was going to upgrade some drivetrain parts but it shifted flawlessly in mud and very demanding climbs.
I'll wait till things wear out to upgrade. I might go to a 5 in fork for more ground clearance and slightly slower steering, but right now it handles so well I'm not sure what I'll do.Damn good buy, Damn good bike.

The bike is light and responsive. I have no problems with the chain while climbing. The Deore/XT combo provide for very smooth shifting. The fox rear shock really absorbs the bumps. The only problem I had was with the rim breaks. On downhills, the bike did not have enough brake power for my taste. I think nowadays a $1400 bike should come with disc brakes. I would recommend replacing the rim brakes with disc brakes. All in all, I really enjoy the bike and would recommed to anyone who wants a good all around bike.

It drives very well, and I think that except for the disc brakes (I want them), it is very complete for the riding I do. Well, my front rim went pooof, but I'm 210 lbs, so maybe that helped to bent the rim.

I really recomend this bike for trail riding, goes well up and down. If I were in the position to buy a new bike, I would buy it again, or maybe the Stumpy 120.

Strengths:Looks really good, and most of it is really tough.
Weaknesses:Have constant problems with the seat. Turned the front rim into a taco pretty quick, and have broken spokes on the back just about on a weekly basis. Very disapointing

Bottom Line:Love the bike, if only the rims were as tough as the rest of it. Probably tough to find anyhting better for the $$$ though.

Strengths:"Riding on rails" handling, awesome shock performance (front and rear), good component mix for the money.
Weaknesses:The brakes and seat definitely need to go. I replaced the brakes with Avid mech. discs and the seat with a WTB Speed V.
