Cross Country Rider Summary: I rode this recently on a trip up from Queenie. The downhill is awesome - it was quite rutted and was a work out and a half on my arms (even with full sus and fox brain).
The climb out took me about 2 and half hours, but it was not hard just progressive. Really enjoyable day out!
To make it better we stayed at a place called The Park (http://www.the-park.co.nz) in National Park. It's awesome and has a funky house bar and spa pool - I needed both. Other recommended trails in the same area: The McDonald Loop - more technical and lots of diversity
The Fisher track - 21km

Weekend Warrior Summary: Massive long down-hills (bring spare break pads!); river crossings; spectacular views; beautiful native bush; this trail has it all.
For a more detailed piece see: http://www.bookabach.co.nz/cf_articles/Tokaanu.cfm
Recommended Route: Trail follows old fire road - so it's hard to get it wrong! Other recommended trails in the same area: Whakarewarewa Forest in Rotorua - a complete playground!
Other trails in Central Plateau, but haven't personally ridden them.

, from Auckland, NZ Summary: Fantastic trail however in winter can get quite boggy. There are river crossings and you can get some great speeds. Full suspension advisable for speed however hard tails fine too. Make sure you start out with a new set of brake pads because its a long trail (3-7 hrs). Howards Lodge in National Park has bikes for hire. Recommended Route: Stay @ Howards Lodge in National Park. They will drop you off at the Whakapapa side at the start of the track for about $10 and will pick you up after. If you go the other way you on average climb several hundred metres. Other recommended trails in the same area: There are a number of others but I don't know names. Excellent area with skiing in winter, whitewater rafting, tramping etc.

, from Wellington Summary: Located in the middle of the Norht Island of New Zealand on the volcanic plateau, the 42nd is an epic which everyone should do at least once. This takes you into some of the original forests that sadly now occupy only a few areas. Wind your way along a gravel 4wd track , hang a right and before you know it youre flying down a wicked downhill until you reach Waione stream. From there its a series of climbs and downhills until the final climb out to Owhango. Can be a wild ride - take plenty of water, food, spares, first aid and warm clothes. Watch out for the ruts on the first downhill - they can be tricky. The volcanic soil clogs up clipless pedals which can result in you being cemented to your pedals with some interesting results!!! The length of ride and the uphills require a reasonable amount of fitnes. Worth the ride and you will remember this for a long time. Recommended Route: East to west.....
