Trail Directions
Just go to Auckland city, ride along Mt Eden Road until you hit Mt Eden, ride up to summit on road, rest then hit the crater or any of the other trails down, then head to Newmarket and follow Manukau Rd south until you hit Greenlane Road, turn left and head to One Tree Hill park. Again ride to summit and descend on dozens of gnarly dhs. Repeat as desired. Head back into city and hit the St Kevins Arcade stairs on K Rd down to the park. Carve the banked walls of the park down to Aeotea Square. Hang out with Skaters and relax...you've just ridden about 35 kms. Auckland is awesome for this type of riding, there are around 100 dormant volcanoes and most of them are parks with public access. Just watch out for cow pats.

Summary:
It is Auckland, but you can find a mountain a minute away, if you survive the traffic.

I've ridden most of the above, plus Mt Roskill, volcanic base so they are fine in the pi$$ing rain, even after dark if you dare, depends on the neighborhood you might say.

Recommended Route:
Get away from arterial vehicle roads as quickly as possible, if you want to make it onto the trail unscathed.

Ride with an eye to walkers as Auckland is densely populated and the volcanoes are well visited.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Must use imagination, but a good improvised ride is possible.

Summary:
Mt Eden can be steep in parts if you don't choose your route carefully. Also One Tree Hill no longer allows m'bikers on the grass bits because of the historic Maori sites. The ride can be as easy or as hard as you want it. Therefore Beginner to Intermediate rating. I give it 4 stars because it always works for me!

Recommended Route:
As described but the other way around also including Mt Hobson and the Auckland Museum domain and Teachers Training College (heaps of steps, drops and lumps)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Mangere Mountain, South Auckland
