Hill 394 to Jungle Luge
1 reviews
 4 of 5

Very steep soft single track through a dense jungle canopy, with only one or two clearings. Trail credit goes to Vince and the Aetas that built it. Vince is installing ramps and jumps over the fallen trees as we speak. The bottom section has two big log drops, and also a section where you ride under an enormous fallen tree. The steep part T's into a very old road bed that is completely grown over. Turn left and follow the hand-cut single track down through two clearings to the river. Cross the river, pedal up the next clearing and turn left. The trail re-enters the forest for a mellow but fast bamboo forest cruise, coming out at the back end of Techno Park. Climb the fence and pedal out to the main road.

Trail Directions
Same as for Hill 394 - follow the road to Upper Mau camp, and then to the hospital, turn left just before the hospital. Take the long grind up the overgrown dirt road (was once cleared but has reverted to singletrack as of February 2001. The traihead starts from the top of the second LONG climb, but BEFORE the clearing at the summit of Hill 394. There is a very small clearing with bushes on the left, forge through this and you will see the trailhead. You know you've just missed the turn off it if you find yourself heading to the right and down steeply followed by an impossibly steep uphill stretch that has to be walked.

Summary:
Good trail for intermediate riders, not a walk in the park for beginners (less than a year's experience). I got to ride the trail with Vince and co. when they were still hacking their way through so it was a very technical and arm-numbing ride. It's mostly downhill except for a few flat sections through bamboo groves and forest floors. The trail cuts through a river at the bottom so the river crossing was a refreshing break. Can't wait to ride it again!

Recommended Route:
Directions on mtbr are right on. The clearing where the trailhead is located is a small plateau, so if you're going downhill, you're way past it.
