Hillside Park
2 reviews
4.5 of 5
Hillside Park is a perfect place to improve skills, build endurance or just have fun. Four ski trails, linked together, wind and twist over and around an assortment of hills at the base of the Chugach Mountains. The world-class Spencer Loop(trail 22) is both scenic and demanding. It parallels the South Fork Campbell Creek and climbs a high ridge with a city view before decending in a flurry of invigorating turns. This is an enjoyable trail system for many. In general, the lower the number, the easier it is. Expect hard-packed dirt, allowing swift descents, hard cornering and superior traction on uphill climbs.
Four entrances provide access to this trail system. Take Campbell Airstrip Road 2.4 miles to a large parking lot on the left with a sign indicating South Fork Campbell Creek Trail Head. A well-defined access trail drops before crossing the South Fork Campbell Creek and intersecting with the Spencer Loop.(Go left, cycling clockwise.) The remaining trailheads are located near the top of Abbott Road. The first is behind Service High School at the east end of the oval running track. Stay on the dirt trails and cycle counterclockwise. A paved bike path also leaves from here. It crosses Abbott Road and parallels Birch Road. Just east of high school is the main parking lot for Hillside Park(a large wood sign indicates this). Cycle in a counterclockwise direction. The remaining trailhead is the northern parking lot of the Hilltop Downhill Ski Area. To enter the Spencer Loop, cycle down a dirt road and take the second trail to the right.

Summary: campbell tract and the hillside trails are my favorite to ride in the anchorage area.. thier both easy to access and are very fun to ride.. If your into high speed down hill with lots of cornering, thiers both spencer's lp and hill top ski area, or if your into just going for alittle spin all the cross country ski trails are wide open and offer both up hill and down hill. Their is also plenty of opurtunity for single tract.. my favorite it rover's run.. its fast, has lots of corner's and plenty of roots to hop over.
Recommended Route: I personally like starting at either the campbell airstrip trail head or the abbott lp trail head.. these two trail heads give you plenty of opurtunity to explore all the trails that campbell tract has to offer.
Other recommended trails in the same area: kincaid, power line pass, flat top, arctic valley.. All favorites of mine

Recommended Route: Spencer Loop(trail 22)
