Cross Country Rider Summary: The Airport Loop trail is really two trails the front side facing the city of Sedona and the backside facing towards Oak Creek. Therefore I call the Airport Loop trail: the Frontside of Airport and the Backside of Airport. Both sections start at the parking lot described in the initial information section.
In summary the Frontside of Airport trail is easier than the Backside of Airport Trail. I myself would not ride both trails just to do a loop unless I was a very advanced rider who enjoys a very challenging extremely rocky trail and I only had ninety minutes to do a ride where I was returning to my car at the parking lot.
The easier route is to do the Frontside to the Backside in a counter-clockwise rotation. If I wanted to do a longer ride, I would take either trail to the top and hook-up with the Table Top trail which I would ride to the Windsurfer or Unknown Bandit Trail.
The easier way is down is the Windsurfer trail and the harder way is down Unknown Bandit. At the end of either Windsurfer or Unknown Bandit you end up on the Ridge Trail. From there you can decide to ride towards Redrock Crossing or ride back to the city of Sedona. Recommended Route: Depending on how long of a ride you like and how challenging of a ride I want, I would start with either Frontside or Backside and ride to Table Top trail. If still wanted a challenging ride I would take a left off of the Table Top trail onto the Unknown Bandit trail. If I wanted an easier way down I would take a right off of the Table Top trail and ride down Winsurfer.
As a side note if I took the Windsurfer trail down off of the airport mesa and wanted to ride to the Red Rock Crossing area I would probably make a left turn off of the Winsurfer tail onto to the Bogus Trail which would take me to the top of the Ridge trail. From there I would head down Ridge to the Redrock Crossing area. Other recommended trails in the same area: Herkenham, Carrol Canyon, Bike Path
