Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Weekend Warrior Summary: I was in southern AZ, on military TDY, and got steered to this trail. It is by far the best trail I found in SE AZ. The difficulty is beginer to intermediate. There are lots of flats and rolling terrain, not very technical. It feels like a park rather than a trail system, but it is lots of fun. The trail isn't filled with an ungodly amount of babyheads, like most of the trails I found in the area. You can spend a good 3 hours trying to hit it all. The locals were very friendly and helpful. Recommended Route: I started on the northern side and rode whatever I had time for. Other recommended trails in the same area: I drove from Sierra Vista, because it was worth the trip, the best I could find. I heard there are other good trails around Tucson.

Cross Country Rider Summary: Contrary to the description found in Cosmic Ray's book, overall this is NOT a fast trail. It was really hard to get into a flow on this ride. It was my first time riding here and I have to say, I didn't like it. Here's why: Fast flats lasting 1-3 minutes with small rollers and shallow banks (that's the good part), then. . .descend a fairly steep, short, gravel filled rut into a sand wash. Power your way through the sandy wash and ascend a fairly steep, short, gravel filled rut up the other side. The gravel is more like scree--loose and shifty rocks ranging from baseball to volleyball-size. Dodge ball your way down, hope you don't fall, and dodge ball your way up, rear wheel pushing rocks all around while the front wheel tries to keep a line.
I lost count how many times this happened in the 6.5 mile loop, maybe 20 +/-. Hard to get into a flow. Like making love and having to stop every two minutes to change a light bulb or take out the trash or . . .you get the point. Recommended Route: Salt Lake City, Coeur D'Alene, I'm pretty much over Arizona Other recommended trails in the same area: Pima and Dynamite in Scottsdale.

Weekend Warrior Summary: This a a great place to ride and in composed of amatuer to intermediate level singletrack. Like others have said, its difficulty depends on how fast you go. For the most part, it is gentle rolling. Short desents into washes, then back up the other side. There are some nice, cross country type sections as well. There are a few tiny jumps, a short drop near the Halfpipe, a few sharp rises that, if hit fast enough, can earn you some nice air. Fantasy is almost all one way, so its hard to get lost. But in Arizona Heat, take a map just in case. Recommended Route: There are two entrances. I prefer the Valencia entrance. You pick up the bunny loop from here. Then a few minutes in, I make a right onto the Snake Dance loop. This is an easy loop with tight turns and tons of Cacti. I run the Dance loop back to the Bunny, then on to the Dead Cow, my favorite loop. Try it out and have fun! Other recommended trails in the same area: 50 year trail, Starr Pass.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Cross Country Rider Summary: This is the trail I learned to ride on and continue to hit one or two times a week. Great place for a beginner to learn XC riding and a decent challenge for more advanced riders when ridden fast. Trail is kept clean and well maintaned. Weekends get a little crowded but having the one-way trails eliminates collisions. For the best ride start on the Valencia side. Recommended Route: Valencia East half mile past Nexus turn left into dirt staging area. Other recommended trails in the same area: Arizona trail,Chiva falls.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Weekend Warrior Summary: I love this trail. I live less than a mile from it and try to ride it twice a week. The bunny trail is a great warmup if you want to enter from Valencia Rd. Take all the loops if you can. The Christmas Tree Loop is my favorite. Beware the skull and crossbones entrance to the halfpipe unless you are one of the crazy guys with the $5K full suspension bikes and no love of your body. The trail is difficult enough to keep experienced riders happy and easy enough to get the beginner excited enough to come back. Recommended Route: The Lone Pine is the main loop. The best extended loops are Christmas Tree and the Burro.
