Dun Hill

This trail begins as a jeep trail near Acklin Gap. Single track from there is marked by blaze orange tape on the left side of the trail. It angles westward up Dun Hill, switches back to the east along the ridge and crosses a little creek. After a short climb, the trail then goes up through "The Gauntlet," a narrow, road-like area between step levels of big rocks. From there, the trail switchbacks down a hill and out onto a small point. Eventually, this trail will be extended down to another jeep trail that will create a loop back over the ridge to the starting point. But for now, it's a challenging out-n-back. This is a brand new trail (1/6/07) and could benefit from more traffic. It is VERY rocky, so even though it's short, it commands your undivided attention and no small measure of technique!
From Conway, go north up Hwy 65 to Acklin Gap Road (first traffic light past Pickles Gap). Turn RIGHT and go 4 miles east and then make a RIGHT onto Williams Ranch Road. At about 1/4 mile, the road makes a 90-degree left. Park here. The jeep trail runs south off Williams Ranch Road through a field with lots of cedars. At the south end of this area, where the hardwood forest starts, turn RIGHT and follow the trail due west along the edge of the woods until you see a yellow sign that says "Dun Hill."
Summary: Phase 2 of this trail has been completed to make a loop (check the uploaded map). Once you come down out of the hills (switchbacks after "The Gauntlet"), you enter an old logging road that runs through the bottomland. This T's onto a somewhat more heavily traveled road that runs out to some cleared land with a small lake. But if you see all that, you've gone too far. You should instead make 225-degree left to head back up the hill. This road gets kinda rough, but if you can hang with it, you eventually dump out onto Lance Dr. Turn right to get to Thorpe Dr., take it down the hill back to Williams Ranch Rd. Then you have a nice road ride to cool down!
Recommended Route: The hill up from the bottoms to Lance Dr. is best ridden down, which would mean that you are taking the trail clockwise. However, the trailhead off of Lance Dr. is really hard to find in this direction, so I recommend that you ride counter-clockwise the first couple of times you do it.

Summary: This trail is very, very rocky. I ride a hardtail and found it to be just a little too rocky for me but it should be ok for those with full suspension rides. The rocks aren't too bad, they just kept coming and didn't allow time to sit on the saddle and rest. However, the trail is fairly short. I would not recomend it for new or novice riders. Cadron Settlement is much better for new mountain bikers if you are in the Conway area.
