Ridden Trail: Every few months

, from DARDANELLE, AR Summary: Get your maps at the District Office in Paris or the Supervisors office in downtown Russellville. If you take the route above you will encounter lots of differing types of woods on mostly fire roads and trails shared with horses and 4-wheelers. You will see both on the trail, especially during nice weather on weekends. If you go during the week you will not see anyone. This is a good ride to see a lot of country without having to keep your eyes glued to the trail. You only have one flat (slick rock)crossing to deal with and if the creek is running you have to find a place to carry across or get your feet wet. Recommended Route: Apple Loop--Two good places to start-Right where the trail loops onto the fire road at State 309 (top end of the trail) or just east of the Shoal Creek Bridge on Fire Road 1601. Ride this loop clockwise to get the most of the fast downhills and also have more enjoyable climbs. Other recommended trails in the same area: Huckleberry Loop of the same system. There are lots of fire roads to ride. We have ridden from the top of Mount Magazine to Spring Lake (see Forest Service Maps). There are also lots of places to ride around Spring Lake, especially to the east.

, from DARDANELLE, AR Summary: There are sections that are too steep to ride on the route above but only a short section. You cross Shoal Creek twice and Gulf Creek once and if they are running you will get you feet wet or you may have to search for a close place to cross. The downhill off of Huckleberry (going North) is as good as it gets. There are some long climbs on forest roads and the trails will be worn by 4 wheelers. You will see a few horse riders on the trail during the summer but mostly you will have the trail portions alone. Recommended Route: Huckleberry Loop---Start at the Old Horse Camp(which is accesses by turning right just after crossing the low water bridge in the way to the new camp)and go south up Shoal Creek and then loop back to Huckleberry Mountain. You can skip the loop around the mountain if you don't have the time. Also do not attempt the portion that goes west after dropping off the mountain. It is way too rocky and rough and steep to enjoy. Dodge this portion by staying on the log road all the way to the main fire road and taking a left back to the beginning. Other recommended trails in the same area: Apple Loop of the same system.
