The Slaughter Pen Hollow Trail System
8 reviews
4.25 of 5
The Slaughter Pen Hollow Mountain Bike Trail System is scheduled to open April 21, 2007. The trail has become a reality thanks to Tom Walton and the Arkansas Trail Blazers. They hired The Grey Barn, LLC. to build the trail starting in January 2007. The trail was designed and constructed by two OORC members. Don West and Aaron Hanley. The completed trail includes around 5 miles of fast and flowing singletrack that blankets the mountainside between the north side of Bentonville and I-540. The trail has something for all level of riders, including beginners to experts. Expect to see a combination of singletrack, log rides, drops, jumps, log overs, and teeter totters. The trail construction was completed March 1. Trail signs and Kiosks should be up by the first week in April.
A freeride skills park has been added due to the efforts of OORC members Nathan Woodruff and Chris Crone. Freeriders can enjoy the table top jumps, bermed turns, ladder bridge drops, and wall ride.
Summary: I went here just to ride the freeride park. WOW! What a good time. It's worth the stop. Nice tables, drops, dj's, wallride, slalom course! Check it ooot.

Summary: The new section of Slaughter Pen has been completed and ready to ride. It's located east of the current trail beside Northeast A street. I reccomend riding the orriginal section first to get warmed up before jumping on the new. Expect a more aggressive climbing and technical ride, combined with some sweet sweeping berm turns and free ride jumps.
Recommended Route: Counter clockwise for XC riders so you can take an aggresive line coming down on the berm sections. Free riders do it clockwise so you can take advantage of the log jumps and massive drop section.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Hobbs, Lake Leatherwood.

Summary: I rode this trail recently and was pleasently surprised for something 10 minutes from my inlaws and on the edge of a subdivision. coming from a winter cocoon I was grinning ear to ear on this flowing non-technical single track( with the exception of loose rocks and a couple rock gardens). The stacked loop system allowed for some variety of route and different looks at the northshore style log bridges, ramps and wooden banked turns. I cant wait to visit the mother in-law so I can ride this trail again. This trail is easy if you take your time and do a easy loop but it can be hard and technical if you ride fast loops, double climb route and hit the stunts.
Recommended Route: ask the guys at Phat tire in bentonville about figure eight route and be sure to visit the dirt free ride area with drops, table tops etc.
Other recommended trails in the same area: hobbs state park-fun fast climbing

Summary: FYI: Pay Attention for phase two of Slaughter Pen Hollow coming this winter08 on the city property adjacent to the sewer plant and Northaven Hills subdivisions. Expected to have six miles of additional urban singletrack which will total eleven miles in the heart of Bentonville.
Long Live the Log Rides...
Recommended Route: Start at Phat Tire bike shop located on the square of Bentonville. Talk with Tim, Chris, or Don about the figure 8 route. Then stop next door at Java and do a espresso shot. Bike down N.W. "A" St. 2 miles until you reach the park.
Summary: Previous reviews are pretty spot-on. An overlooked aspect of this park is that its a huge deal for N.W. Arkansas. Built by the experienced, dedicated riders/trailbuilders of the OORC, the trail utilizes the terrain in the best way possible. As part of a public park, this trail sets a precedent in that we can build potentially dangerous stunts, log rides, and drops WITHOUT LETIGIOUS PEOPLE RUINING IT. (There is a hint in this message.) I thought Slaughter Pen was a big step for Arkansas in its ability to let riders get a taste of freeriding. Agreed, this is no epic trail, but a great place to practice skills. The Dirt course is perfectly set up. So if you can't get to the North Shore B.C. conveiniently, come play here. There is some decent video on youtube.com. My rating of 5 is more based on its merit than quality.
