Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Weekend Warrior Summary: I recently rode this with some friends and the scenery was incredible but I was a bit disappointed in the trail condition. We rode roughly half the trail before making a wrong turn and having to finish the ride back to the cars on the gravel forestry service roads. The downhill running counter clockwise was an awesome ride down a loose rocky trail with plenty of overhanging trees, downed logs and creek crossings to keep you alert. If you are looking for a well groomed single track this is probably not you trail. But if you want to spend a few hours enjoying the beauty of the Ouachita National Forest and don’t mind rough real woods conditions you have come to the right place. Here are some tips if you decide to give this trail a try. Be sure and carry a map because the trails are not marked very well. You can print one off of the USDA Forest service website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/ouachita/maps/ . Load up on the bug spray because a lot of the trail is overgrown and you will be ridding in knee high weeds. If you come in two cars leave one at the bottom where you turned off HWY 9 which will come in handy if you make a wrong turn or if you have a breakdown. Other than that bring plenty of water and expect a fun ride through the woods. Recommended Route: Counter clockwise was fun... Other recommended trails in the same area: Any of the CARP trails on the Camp Robinson Military Base.

Ridden Trail: Every few months

, from Little Rock Summary: This mixture of logging roads and singletrack is a moderately difficult trail system. The trail is very rocky, which is to be expected. The rockiest sections are mostly the abandoned logging roads. They are rough but nothing to cry about. There are a lot of creek crossings. Which is fine in the summer, but a bit chilly in the winter. Some are are difficult to cross, so portaging is recommended. The bad part about this trail is that water runoff likes to travel along the trail system, too. Some areas are in dire need of adjustment. Overall, I think it's a pretty good trail. I rarely see anybody on it, though. This is my favorite winter trail. I'm not sure why, but it is. Recommended Route: I take the most outer loop, which is about 10 miles, I think. It's the more difficult loop. I usually ride it clockwise. Counterclockwise is a little bit easier. Other recommended trails in the same area: Little Blakely

, from Greenbrier Summary: This trail is in horrible shape. As mentioned, its very rocky and those rocks are loose and fist-size--not fun. Also, there's alot of dead trees along the trail lying flat and some broken over making you duck all the while hoping they don't decide to topple over on you. There's so many dead trees still standing, it looks like the battle to keep them off the trail will be never-ending. Recommended Route: none Other recommended trails in the same area: I don't know of any other trails in the area, but I like the forest service road rides that you can put together...get a map for the Winona Ranger District and hammer as many miles as you want with great scenery, good climbs.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

, from Benton, AR USA Summary: Brief overview: Steep and rocky. Details: The trail goes through some really scenic country in the Ouachita mountains south of Little Rock. There are some truly exhilerating downhill sections and some soul-searching uphills. I am a fairly novice rider but the trail seems very rocky... however, I enjoy this so really like the trail. There are numerous creek crossins.... I lost count around 10. The creeks are all very narrow but moderately deep and filled with large rocks. I road the trail in the spring so they all had water.... this made approach and crossing a little tricky. The water made it difficult to see what you were in for in advance. The ride out is absolutely BRUTAL... there is no other way to describe it. Several long, long uphills, all of which are relatively steep grades. This was only the 2nd trail I had ridden and I was not in great shape at the time. I had to stop and walk up several of the hills after I "ran out of steam" on the way up. If you are into rocks and fast, moderately technical downhills this is for you. I would not recommend this trail for novices (even though I rode it when I was) or for those not in good physical shape. The area is absolutely beautiful though and from what I hear, the trail is not used much, so you are likely to have a lot of solitude. I'm giving it 3 chili's due to the brutal uphills and the tricky creek crossings. Recommended Route: Do the full outer loop.... pick your poison when the loop actually begins... go right or left. Either way, you are starting out with some killer downhill and some nasty uphill on the way out. Other recommended trails in the same area: Anything at Camp Robinson.

, from North Little Rock, AR Summary: When I rode this trail, it was very rocky and rutted. Part of the trail had been destroyed by logging. I would not ride there again until the trail is repaired. Recommended Route: Only one route to ride. Other recommended trails in the same area: Ride at Camp Robinson/CARP.
