Hurd State Park

It is somewhat technical. The trails kick. All you have to do is climb a little bit. Then its allll downhill to the connecticut river. But then you have to pay for all that downhill. Yep you guessed it up hill. Its not to bad though. Not that steep.

Ridden Once

Summary:
Beginner with a little intermediate climbing. Mostly smooth single/doubletrack and even some broken-up pavement. Not technical at all, except for a small portion of the red trail, near split rock. Good ride for intro into mt biking, a little taste of everything - flat doubletrack, slickrock, pineneedle single track, and climbs, especially comming up from CT River. Good view at splitrock, nice area by river, about 6-7 miles if you ride everything. Would make a good night ride!!! If you want rocks, drops, and technical - head elseware.

Recommended Route:
You can start at either the small pk lot off 151, or within the park itself. Either way you can make various loops to ride all the trails. At the Youth Camping area there is a map.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Day Pond/Salmon River, Cockaponset, Case, Meshomasic

Summary:
Hurd is nice little park, but too short a ride for my taste (under four miles). Hurd is a good place to practice your cimbing skills (very little flat terrain). There isn't a lot here as far as technical trails go. I would recommend Hurd to experienced riders who can climb, unless you are less experienced and don't mind walking your bike a little. At the trailhead, there were a lot of bees.

Recommended Route:
I parked in the lot right off on 151. Take either trail you see there (they pretty much go to the same place). Follow for a mile or so to the main part of Hurd, and you'll see a trail map there. Stick to the red trail. That takes you down to the river for some nice scenery. Nice place for a picnic. For beginners, the climb back up might be tough.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Conckaponset State Forest, West Hartford Reservoir, Pennwood State Park.

Recommended Route:
park in the lot right off of 151 and take the trail into the park....then ride whatever suits your fancy

Summary:
Right now in the fall its tricky. You know there are lose rocks under the leaves but you cant see them. It kicks!!! Not to technical and not to easy its just right. You should go there the next time you have a chance. It is the best. Beware of hikers though. Most are pretty friendly. The trail is part single track part double track. On the decents there are some rocks you can jump off. Start off near the pavilain. On the back side off the rock wall. There are maps in boards around the park. So you won't get lost.

Recommended Route:
Take the red trail!!!! It is sooooooooo sweet. You start off with about a mile and half easy climb. Then its allllll downhill to the river. When you get to the bottom. You have a easy climb back up.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Cromwell Trails
