Millers Pond

Technical singletrak, fire roads, smooth singletrack. Loads of trails. Steep, rocky decents, technical uphill climbs. (again, not sure of length or system, since I rode it only a few times a while back).

Trail Directions
Not positive: Get off I95 to Crystal Mall exit. Got to the light past the main mall entrance and take a right. Go down that road for awhile nad the trail will be on the right side? (havent been there in more than 6 years, so I was hoping that other people would post something about this trail).

Summary:
ROCKS, MUD, STEEPS, TECHNICAL, JUMPS, load and loads of fun.

Recommended Route:
When I grew up in Quaker Hill we would access from Millers Pond Road off of Bloomingdale road. Route is still good when pond is low, however, trees have been dropped on shoreline trail making passage difficult. Upper route (Pilgrim road) has been completely redone and is open to bikes. Lots of work has been done on town land to keep out the motor bikes. Other trails are accessible from Unger/Moxley Road. The race loop on the Waterford Country School property is accessed from this point (South Of the Road). On the North Side of the road look for a dirt path over a washed out culvert and you will find my favorite trail heading away from Millers pond toward what is called "Cohanzie Junction" where powerlines meet from literally 8 different directions. Feels like the mountains of Vermont, and trails everywhere.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Thames River Trails at Conn College, Montville Powerline Trails, Bluff Point, Gungewamp (Or however you spell it).

Summary:
So Millers Pond....
This is real Connecticut Riding. For starters there is generally a good bit of mud to keep it intersting. If you start off from behind the Science Institute of Eastern Connecticut (See Conn. College) you will find an entrance which begins a slight sligle track decent for roughly a mile. You pass the lake...where you will find easy singletrack and double track...follow on to the left of the lack and you will rise through roller coaster style single track that is generally in good condition for 3 miles....then you pick up into an area of motorcycle usage...hence the mud.

Don't worry, the ruts only last about 100 yards, although I did put my teeth through my lips on these. Now for a steady Climb for 15 min. It is a bit loose but pleasant, it finishes with amile of pine covered single track. Then you will hit the road. Go up the hill -its the only way- Take a left, go for 3/4 or a mile, on your left will be the powerline trail...its a very fast singletrack by fall...mid summer its overgrown with brambles so be careful. If you go left at the end it loops back to the lake. Otherwise you continue along the powerline for another mile or two rolling hills type stuff...a nice cool down.
Most times this is a 12-15 mile one lapper. It is pretty rough so don't feel like you didn't give it a good try. If you take the left off the first section of powerline you will find more trails....

Overall this is one of the East Coasts Hidden Beauties. In all there are something like 25-35 miles of trails in that pocket of woods. Have fun!

Summary:
I'm just going to offset Damon's second review because it's ridiculous. Just because you have no sense of direction doesn't mean that the trail had gotten worse the second time you rode it. I personally love the trail. Its got a lot of rocks and if you're good enough, then you can make it through them. Always a challenge and loads of fun! A couple of steep short hills and stream crossings. Hop a couple logs while your at it.

Recommended Route:
From Montville side, Start on Moxley Rd. near the field or slight clearing just up the hill from Hunts Brook Rd. From Waterford side, there is a pump house or something in a neighborhood where you can start from. These points are the tops and bottoms of a large figure eight. Go to the right from Moxley or Left from pump house. The center of this figure eight is the bridge that crosses the highway. Have fun!
