Ridden Trail: Once a year

Weekend Warrior Summary: The other reviews focus on the technical aspects of Penwood. There's lots of great riding for people like me who don't like bouncing over roots and rocks. Map at http://www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325248&depNav_GID=1650 Recommended Route: Start from the West Hartford Reservoirs off Rt. 44 in West Hartford. Park by the two big water tanks. Head down the fire road on the east side of the reservoir. At the end of the reservoir, go straight out to the powerlines and take a right. Follow the road down to Rt. 185 and into Penwood. Take the paved road to the right and then the woods road up to the picnic area. Follow the paved road up to Lake Louise and then you can jump on some of the single track (not shown on the map). This will take you out to a trail in Bloomfield, and then out to the road. From the road, you can come back the Orange Trail, as the Blue Trail is for hiking only. Take the White Trail back to the road, which is downhill blast to the main entrance. Return to the reservoirs via the powerlines.

, from West Hartford, CT Summary: Basically a half loop, half out-and-back with a few hidden side trails to explore. Tough to ride after rain due to all the traprock. Lots of fast descents and tricky climbs. Watch out for bees nests in the ground and on the trail during the hot summer months. Total length of 10-12 miles if you ride all the way to Tariffville and back. Recommended Route: Start on Rt. 185 and head north. Other recommended trails in the same area: West Hartford reservoir & Talcott Mountain. Part of the Tour de Talcott / Tour de Satan reviewed elsewhere on this site.

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

, from Rocky Hill, CT Summary: This is the most technically challenging trail I've ever ridden. There are a lot of loose baby heads, shears, roots, drop-offs, bridges (log, board and rock)and switchbacks to keep you and the hospital busy for years to come! This ride rules. There are few areas that a novice rider would find enjoyable and there are a few areas that you can catch some hellacious speed. Five of us started at 6:50pm (plenty of light) and rode until 9:30 pm (no light at all). It could be very easy to get lost in this trail system especially at night so go with someone that knows the area well if your not too adventurous. We had one fall toward the end of the ride (me, but I walked away!) and one broken chain. Other than that, this ride rules! Recommended Route: Ride along the ridge but BE CAREFUL! This cliff is no joke but the sight is beautiful especially toward sunset. Then head down to ride along the pond/lake. LOTS of good stuff there! Other recommended trails in the same area: Tyler Mill (Exit 14, I-91; by the soccer fields)

, from ct Summary: PEnwood is a very narrow area of riding partially surrounded by paved access roads. Riding on the blue ridge trail will give you some epic climbs and sick descents. Lots of hard technicalities. Continue past the dead end and the trail gets even better Recommended Route: see bikerag.com out on the high blue ridge, back on the low blue to the left or yellow to the right Other recommended trails in the same area: nassahegon

, from Simsbury Summary: This is an excellent collection of trails. The majority of them are quite technical and tons of fun to ride. Lots of rocks and lots of up and down. Look out after rains cause you can literally ride miles through mud. I'm not sure exactly whats on or off limits for bikers as another review suggests (I just ride everything).. I've never seen any signs to this effect. These trails connect with the Metacomet trail that goes through a bunch of towns so you could ride for hours if you wanted to. Nice ride to bring a lunch if you're stupid like me and don't mind eating in the middle of a ride. It's all quite scenic with some great views of Simsbury. Be careful on the cliffside trails cause I hear some guy fell off and died which could pretty much ruin your ride. Anyway, check these trails out. Other recommended trails in the same area: Nepaug
