Ridden Trail: Once a week

, from South Windsor Summary: The old gravel railroad trail is a great warm up. There are some sick trails off of this gravel trail. My buddy and I road out about beyond the markers over three miles then stopped at a bridge and hit some trails off the main trail. THe last time we went it was raining on and off all day. We got in a good 12 miles on the side trails one of the best rides all year. Great single track with intense rocks. Had some great crashes and even a wheel being knocked off a frame. Great for a day of riding thats right in ur backyard, and it will leave you with battle wounds. Recommended Route: Park right next to the Tunnel on Tunnel road in vernon. and ascend a steep incline to the old raildroad trail.

, from Hartford, CT, USA Summary: Go to Steeles Crossing Road in Boolton, CT. This is a popular place for people to smoke and such but don' t worry, they aren't there most of the time. Head in either direction. I prefer to go towards Manchester. In a short distance, maybe about one mile, you will come to a tunnel. Built in 1951. Rather huge and high. Go on through the cool tunnel but lookout for paintballers there. It is a sad site today to see the old railroad turned into a place where people do illegal stuff but times change. From here you go on into Vernon crossing over tunnel road. You will pass several railroad ties on the right still in there original places that appeared to be an old passing siding. Once you enter the Manchester area, you will come across some ties and rails that are still in place. I am unsure if it is the mainline or a siding but the rail dated back from the 1910's. Now, starting in the other direction towards Willimantic starting from Steeles Crossing Road, the grade is a slow uphill grade, bnut starts to go downhill as you get further into that direction. You will go under a route 6 tunnel that replaced the old original railroad tunnel which was a bad move because the railroads are talking of running trains through again. From there if you are up to the ride, you will get to thew Willimantic River, you will come to a rather huge and high bridge. It is unused. The rails are still in place. I suggest notr crossing with your bike as some ties have rotted out. Don't go to much further because the tracks are still used up to a recycling cente rthere. The distance from Steeles Crossing to Manchester is about 11 miles. The distance from Steeles Crossing to Willimantic is just under 16 miles. You can do the whole ride in one day if you are up to an excercise. There are others on the trail who can help you if you get lost. Recommended Route: Start from Steeles Crossing Road and head towards Manchester. Since I am a railfan, I like to take my time and explore the remnants of the old railroad. Also, going in the other direction towards Willimantic has some more remnants such as one gigantic bridge quite a ways down and a few hundred feet in the air where the rails and ties are still in place. Other recommended trails in the same area: ANYWHERE WHERE A MTN. BIKE IS CAPABLE OF RIDING.
