Burnidge (Paul Wolff) Forest Preserve
4 reviews
 3.5 of 5

About 12 miles of short grass trails shared with hikers and horses. Some dirt trails in the trees. Nothing too complicated, most riders can make it up all the hills. Wildlife consists of deer, hawk, fox, wolf. I've seen the first 2 almost every time I ride, the last 2 are seen at night mostly and even more in the fall. It is not really single track and not really fireroad, but somewhere in between.

Summary:
A rather casual riding experience-definitely geared more towards hiking and horseback riding. There were some minor inclines here and there and the path in general was relatively smooth. That being said, I feel it is an excellent place for new mountain bike riders to test out their bikes...

Recommended Route:
All routes are similar. I would probably suggest the route that begins in the southeastern part of the forest preserve (behind the RV camp)

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Kettle

Summary:
I was excited to see a trail this close to home, but disapointed after going. there was very little singletrack that I found & what there was is quite easy. There are no obstacles & several low areas were sandy & loose. There are quite a few mowed paths & fire road type paths covering the whole area. It is moderately hilly. Technically these trails are very easy & the whole area could be ridden with just about any type of bike except road. The scenery is mostly wild prarie with some lagoons & small wooded areas. It is possible to get a very good workout here though because of the rolling hills & soft ground. It could also be a nice place to go for more social outings with people who want to ride easy trails.

Recommended Route:
Access from south side of Big Timber west of Randall

Other recommended trails in the same area:
none, there are none in the Elgin area. there are however some forest preserves that could be home to decent trails if enough local people were here to build & maintain them. If anyone out there knows of local groups or would be interested in helping to start one please contact me.

Summary:
I checked this place out last year and love going there. It seems that more bikers have been in there because trails are more single track and less grass path.

Recommended Route:
Go round and round, you really cannot get lost.

Summary:
This place offers great training because most of the trail is on short grass. You can really get pumping on most of the flats. If you bail hard or break down, the walk out to your car is never more than a mile. Most of the trails are wide enough to pass hikers and bikers without slowing too much, but the horses spook easy. Be courtious and let the equestrian know you are approaching. If you are travelling the same direction, ask to pass, they will usually stop and let you by. If going in opposite directions, it is best to stop and have a drink while they pass you.

Recommended Route:
Wide outside loop, from trailhead, south to RR, east to fence, north to campground, follow road back to parking lot and do it all over coverring the inside trails. I liek the 'Chute' too. Hard to explain where it is located since there are no maps. It starts at the highest point in the FP. Drop into the trees and keep pedalling thru the twisty trail until you come out of the trees.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Deer Grove, 3 Ravines (Palos Hills), Blackhawk FP, Kettle Moraine (WI)
