Finger Lakes State Park
12 reviews

Finger Lakes is home to the venerable White Knuckle Classic (every August). Imagine a roller-coaster of hard-packed motocross loops on reclaimed strip mines. It ain't no pristine wilderness, but the numerous chutes and jumps make for very fun, unique riding...and there are enough trees, ponds and varmints to make it seem like nature. (Note: these trails are open to motorcycles)

Summary:
I thought I'd try this trail out on a weekend once.... BIG mistake! Fifteen-year-old kids from the small surrounding hick towns pretty much rule the place. I never actually saw an ATV while on the trails, but you can hear them e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e!! Do you have 5 seconds to live, or will he fly by on a parallel trail 20 feet away? You never really know for sure and I doubt they'd care if they hit you. They have no respect for the trails since the State doesn't enforce it, so the ground is full of ruts, and roots are exposed everywhere. If the ride doesn't depress you, seeing the land detroyed so badly will.

Recommended Route:
Sit in front of your TV all day instead; much safer in the long run.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
R.B., Three Creeks, MKT, Rhett's Run... anywhere ATVs aren't allowed and the riders respect the land.

This is not a place for mountain bikers. It is for motocross and ATVs. The trails are rutted and torn up - no fun to ride.

Summary:
I recently rediscovered the joy that is Finger Lakes. We kayak here all the time, but what with Rock Bridge, Cosmo, and Binder, I just hadn’t ridden my MTB here in a long time. Also, why risk getting smashed to bits by an ATV, right? If you ride on a Monday through Thursday, though, you will have the place practically to yourself. And there’s so so many trails and they are so so fun, i.e. steep, fast, technical (major rocks and roots) it’s just great. I’ll be riding here about once a week from now on. Ruts suck…literally, they suck you into them like a magnet, and they hold water almost year-round. That’s really the only bad thing though. The circuit I did was the Shakespeare’s Challenge route which took me just under an hour. However, you could easily ride for two solid hours going flat out like a lizard drinkin’. After the ride, we watched the sun set over the forested horizon and then watched the moon rise over the lake. There’s also a swimming beach and lots of camping. Keep in mind that on the weekends this place is a hoosier haven for every form of gas powered mania (not that there’ s anything wrong with that). This place is no fun for a mountain bikers on the weekends, you will be killed and the bubas will revel in it. However, it will me my Monday ride from now on.

Recommended Route:
The Shakespeare’s Challenge course was be-eu-tifully laid out and exceptionally well-marked which is key to not getting lost in this vast maze of trails. Just after the race is great because the signs will be up for weeks. To see the dates of the race see http://www.shakespeares.com

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Rockbridge, Cosmo, Binder
