Katy Trail State Park
30 reviews

Relatively flat the entire distance and covered with fine gravel, "chatt"; suitable for all type bikes, mountain, road cruisers and recumbants. Built on the former corridor of the MKT Railroad. Travels some of the most scenic areas in the state; forests, wetlands, valleys, open pastureland and rolling farm fields. Lots of animal life and particularly birds. The longest "Rail to Trail" in the U.S. Contact Missouri Dept Natural Resources at 1-800-334-6946 for free color map with mileage. Numerous Bed & Brkfasts on or adjacent to the Trail. Come ride - you will love it.

Summary:
It's flat for the most part, some of the trail towards Saint Charles is kind of curvy from the construction on the family arena. I live near the greens bottom trail head. I use the trail to ride into the city of Saint Charles most of the time but sometimes ride west also. The farthest I have rode is Marthasville and back and it didn't take me all day, but most of it. There is a lot of good scenery so if you take a camera you can get a lot of good photos. Difficulty ranges, because it's not the easiest trail to go real fast on. The gravel kind of slows you down. I can keep a steady 18-20 miles an hour most of the time.

Recommended Route:
If you want to go to town and live around greens bottom, I recommend that route, because Saint Charles is the nearest city on the trail. Also, there are trails on the 364 and 370 bridges to go into Saint Louis County. The 364 trail leads to Creve Coeur Park.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Creve Coeur Park, and there's also a trail at laurel park that leads to the rec-plex in Saint Peters.

Summary:
In the "green" part of the year my favorite ride is to Hartsburg - thru green overhanging trees, like passing thru a tunnel. Curves, animal life, including a few snakes (who don't bother you). No hills, just nice riding.

Recommended Route:
With 220 miles of trail I usually stick to the ride from Jefferson City to Hartsburg, or to Columbia or Rocheport. Check out the "new" Cycle Depot at Hartsburg. It has been there a while, but is now under new ownership. Check out their web site! http://www.hartsburg-cycledepot.com

Summary:
Flat and easy-riding the entire way. Hard packed chatt which makes for a comfortable ride. It can be used for speed intervals, but it functions better as a complete chill out ride. Not technical at all but makes for a really nice ride in the peak of autumn. If you got a date who doesn't like riding or is not used to it, this is a good start. Make sure you have a comfortable bike to ride for long distance; recumbants are very efficient on this trail. The sights along the trail are excellent. I really recommend stopping in either old downtown St. Charles to chill; and at the Winery or the White House Tavern in Augusta.

Recommended Route:
From St. Charles start down by the old quarry then ride into Augusta or farther. Or go the other direction and ride into old town St. Charles and ride the brick road for a really neat urban ride.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
I don't know of any quite as tranquil as the Katy
