MK&T fitness trail

easy ride, very similar to katy trail. chat covered roadway with several bridge crossings. trail goes through a nice wooded area for much of its' length. often has heavy jogger and bike traffic(jogging babes make for nice scenery, too). north end of trail ends in downtown columbia. reward yourself with a stop at the flat branch grill and micro-brewery, at the corner of 5th and cherry.
take stadium boulevard to the martin luther king park parking lot(west of forum blvd at the bottom of the hill, watch for wooden sign). also a trailhead on forum blvd., down the hill from chapel hill road. south trailhead is at mcbaine, on the katy trail.
Summary: MKT is a wide, almost entirely flat, shale-covered rail-to-trail project. It's smooth enough for road tires, and flat enough that you just ride in a seated position... forever, and ever and ever. Theoretically, you could start in downtown Columbia and end up in St. Louis (to the East) or Texas (to the West). The scenery is decent for Missouri, especially near the river. If you don't care for technical riding, or you like to ride a road bike and not worry about vehicle traffic, or if you're a recumbent rider, it's a great trail. Just remember to take a comfortable saddle, because you won't have much reason to stand up during the ride.
If there are too many walkers, kids on bikes waiting to run in front of you, or other bikers, just keep riding. The further you get from town, the less people there are.
Recommended Route: Start in Columbia at the parking lot next to the MU power plant and ride to the main MKT trail (about 7 miles). Then head North another 9 miles or so to Rocheport. Have a sandwich and a drink, then turn around the return to Columbia.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Bear Creek trail is similar and can be found in North Columbia.

Summary: I could best describe this as a "family" trail. Very well-kepted, flat, and wide. If your looking for mountain biking, check out rock bridge state park, amoung several others in the Colombia area. As far as a general fitness trail, I'd give this trail a 5 out of 5.

Summary: This is a most enjoyable experience, especially if the ride is on a week day when the foot traffic is not great. I used the trail to connect to the Katy Trail for a ride to Rocheport and back. This turned out to be a great three hour jaunt with a light lunch in Rocheport.
Recommended Route: I started at Statium Road - Any access looks good.

Ridden Trail: Once a week

Summary: The MKT is a wonderful way to see a variety of wildlife, to take a relaxing spin with novices, or as part of a longer training ride. The MKT is approximately 8 miles from the trailhead near Flat Branch Brewery (good, casual food and bears -- IPA's my favorite) to its junction with the Katy. Most of its length is shaded and it crosses several streams via some fairly tall bridges. For a rail/trail, it offers better than average scenery. I frequently use the MKT, before work, as part of a 20-mile loop which includes several, hilly, gravel roads. Later in the day, it sees alot of foot traffic. The MKT is a great way to get through part of Columbia without car traffic. The MKT is great for what it is ... it's just not a mountain bike trail.
Recommended Route: As a connector between the city, the KATY and the hilly gravel roads southwest Columbia (e.g., Howards Orchard, Smith Hatchery, Woody Proctor, etc.)
Other recommended trails in the same area: Rhett's Run, Pine Ridge, Three Creeks.

Summary: this is another trail that is well-suited to families, beginning riders, and anyone wanting to do some training miles to increase their fitness level. several good single track trails are nearby. worst problem on this trail is the amount of traffic. best to ride it during the week or early in the morning. be sure to try the katy trail ale and the green chili beer at the flat branch. makes the whole trip worthwhile!
Recommended Route: start on katy trail, head north on mk&t at mcbaine, end the day downtown in columbia with a beer and meal at flat branch micro-brewery, then check out all the neat stuff at cycle extreme on 6th st.
Other recommended trails in the same area: katy trail, rhett's run, rock bridge park.
