Spanish Lake
4 reviews
 3.5 of 5

Spanish Lake offers an extreme variety of riding trails. From extremely tight single track to the wide-open maintenance roads, Spanish Lake has it all. It offers something for everyone and all skill levels. It is also a single speeders dream, with not many challenging climbs. I would review it as the Castlewood, minus the Cardiac type hills, of North St. Louis County.

Summary:
The trail was not very technical at all. It was very hard to find the trails because of all the leaves on the ground. The single track trails that I did find were overgrown and needed a bunch of maintenance. The trail might be worth riding in the summer, but right now it isn't very good

Recommended Route:
From the trailhead at Sunfish Lake.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chub, SIUE campus

Summary:
Depending on which route taken can be a relatively challenging, albiet somewhat short trail. The general "theme" of Spanish Lake seems to be numerous small singletrack trails that loop back to the main fireroad. Trail surface is mainly packed earth with some rooty areas. Plenty of fallen trees to jump (many of these looked like they had just recently fallen), very tight switchbacks and a handful of creek crossings keeps you on your toes. Only negatives would be the short length of most routes and the fact that you'll have to hop off and drag your bike through a couple sections where fallen (non-jumpable) trees cross the trail.

Recommended Route:
Head towards lake and trail starts to your right. I recommend taking the fireroad and exploring the side trails as they appear, each one I took eventually looped back to the fireroad.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
If you are ever in Kirksville, try Thousand Hills Park (reviewed on mtbr).

Summary:
Definitely worth checking out if you live around North St. Louis County. Has gravel maintenance roads as well as singletrack. Singletrack is tight and most trails are short. There are probably about 6-9 short trails to experience. Some have jumps and tabletops that locals have built. The Jumps make the trail lengths tolerable.

Recommended Route:
Drive past the two main entrances and park at Sunfish lake parking lot. Trailhead starts right by lake.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Castlewood and Chubb.

Summary:
OK, Spanish lake isn't the most technical trail in the area but if offers a great course for getting the heart rate up & keeping it there. You begin with "easy to get lost" singletrack that most cyclists can't seem to find from the parking lot. Most of the trails are tied together with fire road. There is one section of singletrack that you most creep through because it's so tight it needs to be called halftrack rather than singletrack. All I know is when there's a race at Spanish Lake it brings in some pretty big crowds wanting to get in the action. If you're a beginner, Spanish Lake is great place to start. But you may to return again because new trail sections are being designed all the time.

Recommended Route:
Most riders will take the normal counter clockwise lap. If you've never been there before you might have trouble finding the 1 1-1/2 miles of singletrack off the right from the parking lot. Becareful not to get lost in this section.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Chubb, Castlewood,
