Drummer Hill

 4.2 of 5

A network of easy fire roads, snowmobile trails and moderate to technical single tracks that connects to several areas such as Goose Pond and Surry dam. There are good hill climbs and a growing number of rock drops.

Trail Directions
From Central Square in the center of Keene follow the hospital signs and take a right onto Court Street. In approximately 1 mile you will cross over a major road, route 9. After crossing route 9, take the second right onto Elm Street. There are multiple entrances from here. The first left and second left lead to the same spot, the bottom of "Kamikaze". The third left on Elm Street, just before going under the bridge, is Timberlane. There are four trails off Timberlane on the left side of the road and one at the cul-de-sac at the top of the hill. The most used is old Gilsum Rd, the fire road blocked with a chain just past the mailboxes.

Summary:
There are numerous trails on drummer hill that are dh orientated with drops ranging from 3-7 feet. The trails run down the hill and are tech.
once on top of the power line. 3 trails entrences are available. the trail known as Your Mother runs down the left hand side of the western power lines. It features a seven foot rock face that can be ridden down, or lauched. It is then steep and rocky for about 50 yards and runs out into the flat. Climb a quick hill and decends down the lower part of your mother back onto gilsum road.bang a left up gilsum road and then a right to hit up four ass, a complete rock garden down the power lines. GLaven is on the right hand side of the plines when facing west approaching the descent of your mother.
glaven runs down through the woods to the right is fast and technical it lots of fun. single track one is directly across from the fire road that leads to your mother.
there are two offshoots on singletrack 1.
the first is Anthony's trail,
the second is Clevus they are technicle and rough trails dropping you on the north and south p lines. Anthony's trail comes out lower on the n+s plines than Clevus.
Clevus connects to Kinex bringing you to Threader.
climb up to your right on the p lines to hook on to the first trail, Kinex by banging a dh left. That leads you back to gilsum road and to Threader.
keep climbing north up the n+s p lines will intersect you with single track 2
or the lower of your mother
by taking a left down the hill.
single track two will lead you back to gilsum road and across it to continue to single track 3
single track 1,2,3 are all good trails that can be ridden by all. In 1 there is a 5 footer for those who want to try it as an off-shoot after the first descent.
2 is fun and rolling.
3 is fast and has some good corners. anthonies trail runs along a ridge. it starts out with 2 3 footer back to back between trees. runs along a ridge with an optional drop,a good rock face, or a run around.all lead into sweet boulder drop into a hard corner. clevus starts out with some rollers and runs down a hill banks off another and into a nasty rock garder. there is a good jump if you can find the line following a technicle down hill and a short up hill.
when the trail exits to the n+s plines on the left there is a boulder with rocks piled up on the front. Threader is a great dh trail with technical terrain. a 7 footer and a rock cleft drop between narrow trees that about 4 feet onto a tranny.Threader will bring you to the lower road that bitch the water tower, threader trail, single track 3,all come out on.

Recommended Route:
From Timberlane road, approximately 3/4 of the way up the initial hill, go left down the embankment onto a fire road / double track. Climb a slight hill until you reach a single track on the right. This junction is where the fire road splits in two above a little pond. Go right on the single track ("Bitch") and climb this until you reach Old Gilsum Road. Go left and climb to the intersection / clearing behind the water tower. you are now in the middle of drummer hill.continue to climb up gilsum road. gilsum road allow access to 2 seperate single tracks on the right that ascend to the top of the power lines, looking west ofrom your mother you can ride directly down the face of the face of the power lines, or follow a single track into the woods on your left when looking west down the power lines that run toward keene and into the valley.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
there are several other trail stemming from the lower road that are excellent including atom bomb, the edge, kamikaze, and a trail directly across from the bottem of Threader.

Summary:
This is a great cross country ride that connects Drummer Hill and Goose Pond. It has a mix of terrain for all levels of cross country riding. Beginners should have heart and be prepared to walk up and down some sections. The Edge has tossed many people, even those that ride it regularly. Beginners may want to stay off the Atom Bomb as that is very steep. This is a cool loop to do laps on, the hills will test your stamina.

Go left down a single track (Water Tower). At the next intersection you'll go straight so hammer it out of the bottom of the single track onto a fire road (the top of Kamikaze). After you slow down and go uphill a little, look for a single track on the right, it's just just after a muddy spot that is sometimes dry and the main trail turns left. Go right on this single track (The Edge) and follow it to the bottom of the hill where it joins a fire road. (Variation: Continue on Kamikaze until you see another single track on the right (Atom Bomb). This goes straight downhill to the bottom of The Edge.) Go right and then quick left and cross the stream to climb up a double track. Continue past the power lines until you T into a fire road. Go right, it's wet here, and go straight at the next junction. Immediately after a fire road joins from the left the trail forks with a single track on the left and the road on the right. Go left on the single track and you'll T into a single track on the shore of Goose Pond. Go left to cross the spillway and follow an easy double track along the shore of the pond. (Variation: go right and follow a more technical single track around the pond.) Stay on the main trail until it forks and you see a white arrow pointing to the right and a white double trail blaze on a tree. Go left. If you did the variation you will cross a stream before you reach the tree. Continue until you T into a fire road. Go right. A lung burner now begins, but it can be had in the middle ring. Follow the wet, loose, rocky fire road uphill, crossing a stream and the power lines. The toughest part is immediately after the stream but it's followed by a rolling downhill section that's more than long enough to catch your breath. At the T intersection your back on Old Gilsum Rd. Go right. After crossing the powerlines go left up a fire road where there are snowmobile trail signs. Climb past the power lines, bear right at the fork and climb to the top of the hill and the power lines. Go straight across the power lines on a single track. There is a fork in the trail after some rocks and a right turn. Bear to the right to stay on the more moderate cross country trail. There is a 4' drop variation, on the right at the bottom of the first significant hill, that puts you right in front of the small muddy stream. The single track will cross power lines, a double track and Old Gilsum road before it T's into a fire road. Go left. Get in your big ring and hammer it down past the water tower trail and bear right at the fork above the pond where you turned up Bitch. This will bring you out at the bottom of Kamikaze. Go left to exit on Drummer Road. The ride takes approximately 1 to 2 hours, pavement to pavement, depending on ability.
