Peaked Mtn connector Via Cranmore & Black Cap
3 reviews
 3.33 of 5

Start by heading towards the health and racket club. To the right you will notice a dirt jeep trail. This is the beggining of the Cranmore access road. Once you pass the power lines on your right the serious climbing starts. This dirt rd. climbs steadyly for 2.75 miles and rises just about 1000 vertical feet!! It has three major hills with rollers imbetween. If you've got some good climbing legs it can all be done in the middle ring except for the third hill. This one leaves you gasping in the 22x30. Just as you round a corner your connector trail will be on your right. You cant miss it as it is marked with a pile of orange and yellow rocks and blaze marks on the trees. Seeing you just did this climb its worth it to do that last little hill to your left and go to the summit for the fantastic view and a rest. Then come back to this trail. This is the Cranmore connecter trail. It starts as a very technical climb but mellows as it continues. It climbs for 1 mile before it intersects with the Black Cap trail. At this trail take a right. Follow up untill you reach a fork. Stay right and continue to the Peaked Mtn connector. Bear right on to the Peaked Connector, and at last follow it down. Your now in some beautifull back country about 7 miles east of town. The NH/ME wilderness is to you left. Follow this trail down for quite a way. Keep alert as it gets pretty technical in some spots. At the old snow fence continue straight. A ways down the trail spilts. The right fork takes you though a small ravine and back to the base of the service. Stay left to extend your ride. This will take you to the power lines that you passed at the start of your ride. Take a right on them and follow back to Cranmore. This is a truely challenging back county experience that you can start right from town. Plus it's virtually impossible to get lost.

Summary:
You can also cross the lawn to the right of Cranmore's main lodge and aim for the top of the drainage culvert to the right. From there a faint jeep/service road climbs up and right on one of the green ski trails (singletrack) winding to the summit. Some hike-a-bike but a good alternative climb (less bugs too).

Recommended Route:
Great ride ! Alternative to the initial climb on this description.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
From the top of Cranmore, head down Rattlesnake to the base, take right on Kearsarge Rd to Buttonrock Inn, then take the trail in back of the Inn (Mt Surprise Trail) all the way to Tuckeman's Tavern. Beer.

The best downhill in the valley!! Knarly sections that you must be ready for. Fast rolly sections at bottom that can't be beat.

Recommended Route:
Top to bottom.
