Ridden Trail: Ridden Once
| |
Reviewed by: Cliff Wright
, from Tulsa, OK Summary: Once at the parking area, take the uphill trail to the left. Uphill is an understatement. This trail leads to the top of Sparrowhawk mountain to a ridge overlooking the Illinois River. The view is pretty spectacular. The trail follows the top of the ridge to the small neighborhood settlment of Sparrowhawk Village. This trail is in the Sparrowhawk Mountain Wildlife Management Area. The trail is relatively smooth with loose flintrock. If you are into hiking this is the trail for you. The downhills are short but fun when you get to them. The climbs are long and steep. The offroad portion of this loop is only around 2 miles until you reach the village. Once there, you have to ride through the neighborhood and take the dirt road leading to it back down the mountain. This dirt road down the mountain is steep (as far as roads go) and fast. Take a right when you reach the paved county road and it's about a 3 mile mostly uphill ride back to the parking area on this road. There is a brutal uphill section in the middle. The whole loop is 6.3 miles according to my computer. This trail is a nice been there done that trail, but that's about it. I would not recommend it unless you happen to be in the area visiting in-laws with nothing else to do. Skill level is intermediate for trail technicality but advanced for it's aerobic workout. Recommended Route: This trail is accessed by taking Highway 10 out of Tahlequah and turning East on road D0730 (not marked) at the Sparrowhawk sign. The parking area is on the North side of the road maybe 1/8 of a mile down this road.
