Ridden Trail: Every few months

Cross Country Rider Summary: A pretty nice ride if you're in the area. The above directions were a little confusing for me, so I'll add my 2 cents...
Travel through Custer State Park on highway 87 (no entry fee charged if you come from the south!) and turn east at Blue Bell CG, following signs for Horse Camp and French Creek/Centennial Trailhead. Park at the French Creek TH. From the trailhead, ride back the way you drove in, through the horse camp, and watch for the Centennial trailhead on the left. Follow the Centennial Trail south (marked with the number 89) for approx. 2 miles to the Wildlife Loop Road (CSP 1) and turn left, heading SE. The trail along the N side of the road is worthwhile, especially if you hate spinning tires on pavement during a "mountain" bike ride. 2 miles of flat trail/road lead to a left turn on singletrack into the forest. Be sure to check out "big tree", the 2nd biggest ponderosa pine in the U.S. (according to the park...) about 1/4 mile in... you can't miss it. This is also the site of the 2007 "4-mile" fire. It's nice and green in there now though! Follow this single/doubletrack for a couple more miles, dumping you out on CSP 3, a decent gravel road. Turn left and follow CSP 3 a while, which dumps you out on CSP 4, which is a beautifully graded gravel/dirt road. Follow this back to your car and drink a beer.
NOTE: my bike cpu tells me this loop is just over 10 miles, for what it's worth. The above review and the CSP website list it at 15.5.

Recommended Route: I like counterclockwise beginning at the French Creek/Centennial TH... it only has 1 or 2 short steep climbs and leaves a smooth road ride to end it. Other recommended trails in the same area: Just moved here... sorry.

, from Houston Summary: Pick up a written description of the trail at any local Park Visitor Center. I rode it clockwise from parking lot, but recommend riding counter clockwise as described in the brochure. Go to Centennial trailhead, at east end of Horse Camp, and head South. This part of trail is 1.5 miles long, and is uphill about 1/2 way. Good single/double track. Trail turns left/southeast along Wildlife Loop road for est 2 miles. Ride paved road or single track through grass. Nice scenery but dull ride. Follow description left/north into woods. Nice up/down single/double track, well marked. After about 1/2 the total route, you pick up Custer State Park roads with well packed gravel. Sort of scenic and may have some auto traffic. Several animal sightings, including heard of buffalo on the road. Very scary to ride through buffalo. Trail is basically two parts: single track for half, park roads for half. Recommend riding counter clockwise to ride trail while "fresh". Park roads are easy to travel if tired. Climbs seemed difficult for this "flatlander", but may have been the 2 Benadryl tabs I took prior to ride. No water along route. Lots of tourists may provide "sag wagon" opportunities. Horses share trail. Recommended Route: Counter-clockwise from east end of Horse Camp/Blue Bell area Other recommended trails in the same area: Centennnial from Mystic to Ruchford. Slight uphill for 7-8 miles. Grab beverage/bananna at bike friendly saloon. Ride back to Mystic.
