Dana Peak Park

Many different types of trails. From the rocky lake front and hill trails to the hardpack flats. Just started biking there and have hardly been on the same trail yet. Plenty of good climbs to get your legs burning and enough flat areas to get into your high gears and get a new max speed on your bike computer. Can be muddy in the low areas after a good rain but it will dry quickly because of all the limestone rocks and the run-off towards Stillhouse Hollow Lake.

Trail Directions
From U.S. 190 exit at FM 2410 (where the Heights State Bank is). Continue on FM 2410 past the new Harker Heights 9th grade center and look for a sign on the left hand side of the road pointing right to Dana Peak Park. Turn right on Limestone Trail towards the park and continue on past the first gate as you enter the park. You can park just past the first 10mph right hand turn for free (and if there is enough room) or continue on to another parking area just short of the park or continue on into the park and pay a fee...the choice is yours...

Summary:
I rode this trail the thursday before memorial day. Just visiting some relatives so I though I would bring my ride. Lots of rain and flooding the day before. The route I took was really Rocky and steep. I rode over the top and had q pretty quick run down the other side to find out that most of the area was flooded. Some area were 10'-12' under water...No joke. I found another path but ran into more floding. Spent most of my time hopping off and walking through the woods to get around the flooding. Anyway looks like a good area to ride, when conditions allow.

Summary:
Well as far as the ride, I loved it, since it was the first one back from Korea, and all the mountains there. It is a great long trail and you need to be in pretty good shape to conquer alot of the trail heads. Pay attention to the cactus, they are sparse but will bite you in the butt if you are not careful. Next try and get out on the trail early, before the sun gets a beamin, long open areas, tend to ware you out and having the lake right next to you makes for some great views, bring a camera and enjoy, also take tools and tubes, there are some technical areas that will shread your tires, leave the sand nobbies at home get some real tires.. You will thank me.
Enjoy and see you out there.

Recommended Route:
look at the main route to it.
Many places to start from.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Any one of the many in Austin, and Blora, all good tracks.

Summary:
I AM A BEGINNER I AHVE ONLY BEEN REALLY RIDING FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS. THIS PLACE HAS TRAILS FOR EVREYONE. I HAVE RIDDEN ABOUT 10 TIMES IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS AND I STILL HAVENT BEEN ON ALL THE TRAILS. HAS TOUGH UPHILLS, YOU WILL PROBALLY HAVE TO WALK YOUR BIKE UP UNLESS YOU HAVE REALLY GREAT ENDURANCE. BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT ON THE WAY DOWN ANY ONE OF THE PEAKS. YOU CAN SPEND 2 HRS RIDING EASILY WITHOUT GETTING BORED ANY ONE OF THE TRAILS IS GOOD (EXCEPT AS YOU GO THROUGH THE CABLE GATE AND GO STRAIGHT ABOUT 500 FT OR SO THERE IS A TRAIL THAT HAS A SIGN "VEHICLES PROHIBITED" DONT GO DOWN THIS TRAIL UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET MUDDY) I HAVE HAD AN AWESOME TIME EVERY TIME IVE GONE IT DOESNT MATTER IF YOU ARE W/ SOMEONE OR NOT. BE CAREFUL ON THE JUMPS AROUND THE 1ST PEAK I BROKE 3 SPOKES AND BENT 5 OR SO MY FIRST TIME OUT ON MY NEW BIKE. HAVE FUN!TAKE TOOLS AND A SPARE TUBE YOU MIGHT NEED IT ITS A LONG WALK BACK

Recommended Route:
I DONT KNOW THE NAMES OF THE ROADS, BUT IF YOUR COMING FROM THE KILLEEN AND COPPERS COVE AREA IT IS EASY TO FIND. YOU TAKE THE FIRST HARKER HEIGHTS EXIT TURN RIGHT AT THE LIGHT, GO ABOUT A MILE OR TWO PAST THE HIGH SCHOOL YOU WILL SEE THE SIGN FOR THE PARK, TURN RIGHT FOLLOW ROAD INTO PARK ENTRANCE, YOU WILL SEE SOME PARKING ON THE LEFT THAT IS THE BEST PLACE TO START.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
IVE HEARD THE TRAIL AT BLORA IS PRETTY GOOD TO BUT YOU DO HAVE TO PAY.

Summary:
I loved the hiking around the peaks. The biking was
awesome as the scenery was just beautiful. The trails
didn't seem too technical but the length of the trails
and scenery more than made up for that.
You definitely have to be in good shape if you are to
ride up the peaks. Some areas I had to drag my bike up
but the ride down was cool.
I camped out for one night in the cold,I was the only
person there on the primitive side. The drive from
Houston was totally worth it as this is a beautiful
park.

Summary:
You can explore to find any combination of trails. Most are smooth fast singletrack, (ruts too)on the far side of the lake are some steep rocky climbs. There are jumps (not recommended for beginners) and Hooptedoos. Go all the way around any hill you find, you will find various trails along the way. (Some straight over the top) There are about 15 miles of trail. How you piece it together is up to you. For an interesting first ride, keep the lake on your right going out as far as you can find trail, and always turn right on your way back. (don't cross fences and don't go up that steep old road) If you get lost find the lake and follow it back to the campground. Map? see this site: http://members.tripod.com/forthoodtrailblazers/new_page_3.htm

Recommended Route:
Get on FM 2410 in Harker Heights, Turn Right on Commanche Gap Rd, (Fireside is a bar on the Left) Follow Commanche Gap through the gate and on to the 10mph right hand curve. (3 to 4 miles) Find a place to park there.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Blora - Follow the race course. You will like it.
