Birch Creek Unit unnamed trail

Narrow, flat, smooth, twisting, duck & dodge, fast, and fun! The Somerville Trailway, on the other hand, is wide, 13 miles long, and fairly rugged for a multi-use trail.

Trail Directions
From Park office, take a right to the campsites (take left fork; equestrian sites and Trailway are accessible from right fork). Just past third drive, a singletrack can be taken off the right side of road. Two more come off the road before this one, but I haven't checked them out yet.

Summary:
I would not call this a mountain bike ride. Its more 13 miles of dirt roads. Very little elevation change. The only technical part was dealing with some sandy sections. I even thought the scenery was kind of lame.
I knew of this place for years but never heard any talk of it. Now I know why. This place is good for racking up miles, about 26 miles round trip. Also good for the novice beginner. A good place to bring the whole family for a casual, relaxed ride.

Recommended Route:
Out and back from ranger station.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
If you want a more challenging ride, head south out of Giddings to Bluff Creek in Warda.

Summary:
This is a narrow, smooth, flat trail in dense woods. It opens up to the lake (beautiful!), then back into the woods. Fast and fun, though not technical. After the ride, go to Judy's (on the entrance road before you get to office...you can't miss it) for grub and a brew.

Recommended Route:
When you leave the office, take a right out of the parking lot. A fork in the road leads to equestrian sites and Trailway (right), and to campsites (left). Take left fork, go past third drive (on left side of road), and look for a singletrack to the right.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
The Somerville Trailway is 13 miles long, and will take you to Nails Creek Unit on other side of the lake. One way, they say. Wide, multi-use, pretty rugged in spots, gentle slopes up & downhill, scenic stops overlooking lake....nice trail to build stamina.
