New Quarter

This is another great trail built and maintained by the Eastern Virginia Mountainbike Association (www.evma.org). Part of the Confederate Defensive Line was on this property and there are three Civil War dugouts clearly visible in the first mile of the trail. Please respect the area's history by not disturbing them. The trail is a 5.8 mile singletrack loop designed to be ridden counter-clockwise and is suitable for intermediate riders. Beginners will have trouble negotiating some of the tight turns and climbs, but there's nothing dangerous to contend with. All the obstacles are either reasonable or have a ride-around. The first 3 miles follow the contours of a ravine which runs from the parking lot to the park entrance and there is barely a flat section in it - you're going up or you're going down! Most of the trail has good flow and sweeping turns, but there are some tight turns on downhill sections to watch out for. Once you know the trail you can carry your speed. Most of the climbing in this section of the trail is between milepost 2 and milepost 3. The second half of the trail returns to the parking lot closer to the treeline. There is less climbing and fewer sharp turns, but still enough challenge to hold your interest. The trail has an offshoot a little way past the 3 mile post. Go straight for a shortcut or turn right for more of a challenge. At the next split in the trail, go left for a large log pile, or right to detour around it. After a double switchback climb and an uprooted tree made into a smooth ride-over is about the only flat area of the trail. It's fast and fun so make the most of it because there's more climbing ahead. When you get to bumps like plow furrows you're almost done. If you've missed riding at Waller Mill since Hurricane Isabel, you need to check out this trail.

Trail Directions
From I-64 take exit 242A to Route 199. After about a mile take "143 Williamsburg" exit and turn right onto Merrimac Trail heading toward Williamsburg.Turn right at the traffic light past the 7-11 Store (about 1.3 miles) onto Penniman Drive then take the next left onto Hubbard Lane. After about 1 mile turn right onto Lakeshead Drive. Lakeshead Drive ends at the park (a little over a mile). If the park gates are open, drive in to the parking lot. The trail head is on the left side of the road just before the turn to the parking lot. The trail is designed to be ridden counter-clockwise. If the gates are closed, park in the turn-around area to your left. Ride over the grassy knoll on the left side of the entrance gate and look for a trail at the tree line. This is a short cut-out trail. Turn right when you reach the main trail. Per York County Parks it's OK to ride the trail during daylight hours when the gate is closed, but the bathrooms are closed and you ride at your own ris

Summary:
New Quarter Park was my introduction to mountain biking, and it is the reason for my recent addition to riding. I was formerly a BMX rider (though 10 years ago). I went with a group of people with various skill levels and I found myself keeping up with them very well. The trails are very well maintained and there was very little confusion about where you should or should not be. The Confederate Bunkers I did not see, however, I was going pretty fast through that area. The trail is well packed down and well groomed. There are plenty of roots sticking up to keep you on your toes and it keeps your attention on the trail, as well as ruts caused by rain runoff. The switchbacks are a great challenge and the uphill’s that follow are rather benign. There is one hill between mile 2.5 and 3.5 that I had to get off my bike and walk, but everything else was very enjoyable for my level, which I consider beginner! After the ride I was told this was an intermediate trail and I wasn't surprised and I could see why. The logs that are on the trail all offer an alternative route, so it is not a daunting feat. There are also numerous "bail-out" locations to where you could leave the trail and exit to the main road and back to the parking lot. This also allos someone to enter the trail at any one of the numerous "entries" as well. This is my favorite trail in the area both due to it popping my mt bike fever cherry, and due to the enjoyment of the trail. I will be back to New Quarter Park, thanks EMVA!

Summary:
I love New Quarter Park! I would say this is an intermediate trail. If new to mountain biking, this could be a great workout; if not new to mountain biking, go to Freedom. I do enjoy New Quarter because there are many logs and a couple switchbacks to master that totally increased my skill level. When I don't want to kill myself I go here... just to get a good work out and still have a lot of energy for the day.

Recommended Route:
You can enter at a few different places; we always start at the first parking lot because it saves the last little uphill for the last (although after riding Freedom it seems insignificant!). Super fun, busy park.

Summary:
I rode this trail today with my wife for the first time, and we both enjoyed it a lot! It has a great mix of fast flat track, and bumpy, technical track. Not too many hills or obstacles to keep your mind too busy, but enough to keep you on your toes. Well marked, extremely well kept, and a lot of fun!

Summary:
Excellent XC trail! Although never an easy task, the EVMA crew has been able to lay out a fairly technically challenging, yet environmentally sound, cross-country single track. The trail flows at a good consistent pace, with just the right touch of obstacles to be challenging for the majority of riders, yet not scare away the inexperienced riders. Good workout trail - you can get into a specific heart rate zone and flow with it for miles. There is one spot where you blast through a series of never-ending mid-to-high speed switchbacks in a lush, green forest. I think there is a black hole back there because my bike seems to effortlessly pick up speed as I slice back and forth along the loamy trail, dodging flashes of greenery. Sweet! The trail even has an optional series of north shore-type obstacles near the trail head. Another key to the success of this trail is the comradeship found at the trailhead. It’s long been a staple of the local mountain bike scene.
