Spruce Railroad Trail
1 reviews
 5 of 5

This could possibly be the most unique trail riding experience someone could have in the state. This trail is not considered extreme by any shape or form. I would rate this trail #1 for family oriented trail riding. The spruce railroad trail is a local historical landmark within the Olympic National Park. This trail borders a good majority of the Lake Crescent shoreline. This trail was originally a railroad grade that was constructed during WW1 as a way to extract precious Spruce trees to make bi-planes for the war. Later on the railroad was abandoned in the 1950's and later became the only permitted mountain bike trail in the Olympic National Park. This trail provides breath-taking secenery most of the way. Points of interest are the old railroad tunnels and "The Devils Punch Bowl" (a 300ft deep cove). Hikers and bikers will cross over devils punch bowl by way of metal foot bridge. The trail actually runs most of the way on the ol' railroad grade with some deviation from the original railroad path. This trail is very easy for any skill level and most of the grade is flat.

Summary:
In my opinion, this trail is the best beginner trail in the state! The scenery is absolutely spectacular, yet an easy ride all the way through. The trail mostly follows the old Spruce Railroad grade from the early 1900's. The entire trail parallels the shoreline and provides excellent views of the beautiful deep teal waters of Lake Crescent. This is the only offroad bike trail in the Olympic National Park. Wildlife is very abundant in this area to include blacktail deer, black bear, coyotes, and various birds. In recent years, cougar/mountain lions have been sighted on the trail and warning signs were posted at the trailhead. I would definitely recommend this trail to anyone looking to get a scenic ride but still have energy to enjoy it all. The trail is dirt single track with some sharp rocks in places and later abandoned roadway.

Recommended Route:
From Port Angeles take U.S. Highway 101 west to mile marker 232 and turn right onto East Beach Road. Following this road for 3.2 miles, just past the Log Cabin Resort, you will find the sign for the Spruce Railroad Trail, turn left. The parking area is near some houses just a mile ahead.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Lower Dungeness Loop
