Imogene Pass
5 reviews
 3.6 of 5

The trail starts in Telluride at 8750' and climbs to the top of Immogene pass at 13114', for a total elevation gain of 4300+'. The first part of the ride is on a pretty decent road. At about 11000' you reach an abandoned mining town which has the ruins of the highest YMCA in history. At this point the road gets a little rougher and steeper, but still not really technical. This ride is all about dealing with pain, just keep pedaling and breathing (which is hard at 13000'). It took me about 4 hrs. to reach the top (I was riding with some beginners who stopped halfway), and about 15 minutes to get back down. One of the problems with this ride is that it is a popular 4wd road, so there are lots of jeeps passing you. If you want to shuttle, you can keep going all the way down to Ouray, which is slightly lower than Telluride, so you'll get even more downhill.

Summary:
We started in Telluride and went to the pass from there. We were living in CO a couple years earlier and were confident with our climbing at altitude but this was a bit of a re-awakening to elevation. It's just rocky fire/jeep roads which are only a bit of a problem when you are cranking downhill. Scenery is amazing and the history is interesting..old abandoned mining ruins, sites, hardware, cliffs, waterfall. Got snowed on at the pass which we were prepared for (Sept.) and crashed in high speed downhill trying to beat sundown. After about 2/3rds, there is alot of real rocky sections that I had to walk up. The pass was spectacular, nothing else to say about that (even in my hypothermic condition!)

Summary:
Zach wrote a great description, but I think the last two miles of the trail, above the ghost town, is a little more technical than Zack gives credit. I mean,
four hours, six miles... you do the math. There's
something going on here. I climbed two thousand feet
those two miles, encountering a whole mess of big honkin'rocks on some gnarly pitches... though like he said, it really was fun flipping-off all the Jeeps on the way down.

Recommended Route:
Just one way up.

Start from Telluride because this is a very nice town to stay for a while. Follow the road as Zach described it in the message below.

Summary:
I once rode this pass in a tour of the San Juan Mountains. We left from uray and rode to telluride. This climb is the most difficult I have ever done. I really enjoyed the first half going up through box canyon and past the yanky boy mine. At one point the road follows the edge of a sheer 600 foot cliff then winds up and over the pass. I think this is the only ride I've ever done that has brought tears to my eyes, but I made it and had a rewarding rest at the top, with incredible views and wishing I had my tele skis with me to ski the snowfields in august. I would recomend this to any skilled and fit climber who wants a challenge, no one else.

Recommended Route:
I rode this from uray to telluride
