Gunpowder Falls Sweet Air Rd

A fun mix of singletrack & fireroad. Singetrack is somewhat technical, because it was created more by hikers & equestrians than bikers. Bikers are allowed, however, so don't piss anyone off by flying by some old lady on a horse. What's really fun is you can cross the Gunpowder several times on the trails, and take a cool swim if you want. Overall, a sweet place to ride, especially since Loch Raven is becoming more restricted. There is a convenient map located right at the parking lot: study it for a few moments, it will make your ride much more enjoyable. Lots of steep descents and logs to make things interesting. I'm not sure, but I think it's actually possible to bike the entire Gunpowder Falls State Park, but I have not confirmed this by actually trying. Anyone out there know if it is possible? (it would be a real long ride).
Summary: I agree with most of what others have said. This is a great series of trail. They are well marked and serve for a good challenge. Be careful if you go after a good rain or when the river is running high because it can get muddy. The trails are well maintained although in some cases they could be more bike friendly - made mostly for hikers and equestrian. Somewhat technical with good climbs and descents, especially when you get closer to the river. I took the blue trail (starting across the road) to the white and yellow... great ride. I will have to go back, just wish it was closer to Baltimore - took me 25 minutes to get there from Harford Rd and 695.
Recommended Route: Harford Rd North to a left on Fork Rd.
Fork Rd. becomes Baldwin Mill Rd.
Left onto Greene Rd.
Right onto Moores Rd.
Right onto Dalton Bevard (dirt road) - if you get to Hess Rd. you went too far.
Other recommended trails in the same area: All of Loch Raven, Lower Gunpowder Falls (Perry Hall), Fair Hill
Summary: I went this past weekend and it was pretty nice. Follow the driving directions given by others, but it's a right on Moore's Road not left. This place is pretty muddy so bring a spare set of clothes. I was there for about 3 hours riding the yellow, blue and red trails. The red trail has some good ascents. Overall, the mud made these trails difficult. Make sure you don't get lost because each colored trail isn't continuous. Each of these trails about 3-4 miles long. The white trail is less than 7 miles. All the trails criss cross each other. Just read the trail signs posted throughout the park to keep your bearing.

Summary: Awesome trails, very well marked and maintained. Good trail map on bulletin board at parking area. Mostly very technical singletrack going through woods, along Little Gunpowder Falls, and through farms. There arent any real long climbs or downhills, unlike Loch Raven. If you are a beginner, stick to the inner trails, because the white and blue trails are harder. If you frequent Loch Raven, you should come to Sweet Air a few times just to mix it up. Anyone who wants to go on a ride sometime, email me at bmxer177@juno.com Have fun guys!
Recommended Route: White loop starts at corner of parking area, near fence. Endless possibilities from there, but if you stay on white trail it eventually hits the blue trail which takes you back to the lot.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Entire Loch Raven trail system, Gunpowder River off Belair Road in Kingsville

Summary: This little sucker has a little bit of everything. Logs, rocks, quick descents, short climbs. There is a really cool single track section in the pine forest off the main loop. Watch out for Mr. Ed
Recommended Route: Take time and explore.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Avalon, McKeldin, Gunpowder( Perry Hall)

Ridden Trail: Ridden Once

Summary: This is a great trail to ride. It has a variety of trails. Some very technical single track to paths along cornfields and everything in between. It is not a crowded trail. You will probably come across a horseback rider during your ride. I am a beginner at mountain biking and enjoyed the trail. We came across a couple advanced bikers that visit the trail regularly. Overall this is a great place to ride. I will definitely be going back on a regular basis
Recommended Route: Start your ride at the far left end at the rear of the parking lot. Before you ride, take some time and study the map posted in the parking lot. Its a very easy map to read and very detailed. I suggest riding the white trail. It is a very technical single track with plenty of logs to jump. The trails are clearly marked at intersections.
Other recommended trails in the same area: Loch Raven seminary road
