Mid-Mountain Trail (A.K.A. 8000 Foot Trail)
4 reviews
 4.75 of 5

This loop can be done in a number of ways. The best and shortest option (2-3hrs/advanced rider) is to climb up the Spiro Trail which intersects the Mid-Mountain after 1000 feet of elevation gain. (It is marked) Take a right turn here and generally contour West on great singletrack all the way to the Canyons Ski Resort where you can water up/eat lunch at the Red Pine Lodge and continue on riding. Or, if you are spent and need a bailout option, you can ride the gondola down, then pedal the pavement back into town. Otherwise, get back on the trail by going 100 feet above the top of the Gondola and the Red Pine Lodge, into another 45 minutes of a mix of singletrack and short gravel road sections. This will then terminate in singletrack at a bridged water crossing and intersection with another gravel road. From this point, you need to go down the gravel road and/or pieces of singletrack trail into the Canyons Ski Area Base, then pedal back on the pavement into PC. For those who have more leg left, CLIMB the gravel road another mile to a rocky ridge where another singletrack climbs up to the North end of the Wasatch Crest Trail. From here you have to reverse and go back down what you just climbed, or drop down 3000 feet into Millcreek Cnyn where you have hopefully dropped a car. Many options exist which can make the ride much BIGGER. To make it more of an epic ride at 35 total miles(stronger riders) Go up Spiro, but go PAST the Mid Mountain trail, climbing the Powerline trail and gravel roads another 2000 feet up to the Wasatch Crest Trail via Jupiter Bowl and Scotts Pass. This option puts you on one of the best high-elevation singletracks in the state.(Wasatch Crest Trail) Ride the Crest Trail to the Millcreek Cnyn. drainage, and from there, go RIGHT, back into the Canyons Ski area, picking up the Mid Mountain trail which can be ridden all the way back to Spiro and/or Old Town/Daly Canyon and your car. 35 miles, and 4.5 hrs ride time on this one.

Trail Directions
Multiple access points. The Canyons Ski area offers a Gondola ride which puts you on one end of t. The best access is via the Spiro Tunnel Trailhead, or thru and up into Daly Cnyn. out of the Old Town and Main St. The SPIRO trailhead is just West of the Park City golf course. Come into town, go right at Empire Ave light,(PC ski area) make your next right(Silver King Dr), then another right(Three Kings Dr) 1/4 mile on left is parking for the Spiro trailhead.

Summary:
Epic trail in a alpine setting, varied terrain for the 25ish miles from Deer Valley to the base of Canyons. This trail is pretty brutal on those of us from sea level, but worth the effort. Much of this trail is rocky and rough, bring an extra tube or 2, you might get a pinch flat. Take a break before doing the decent into Canyons, it is fantabulous.

Recommended Route:
Mid mountain trail from Silver Lake area of Deer Valley to Canyons. Good maps available at local bike shops.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Deer Valley Resort Lift served trails are great for practicing your decending skills.

Summary:
Nothing like riding this 8,000 foot high trail along the eastern face of the Wasatch. It is pretty well shaded with hardly any body on it during the weekdays especially during the Mud.

Last year I had the luck of hitting the Mid when there was a ton of construction going on in White Pine Canyon and blew past the sign warning of the 10+m out-and-back thatlay beyond. It was cool because after we got back from greeting the construction fence we ducked out into a dried out stream bed that connected back up with a trail system system behind Iron Mt. There were a lot of baby heads and fallen logs from which to send it.

When const. is not in the way The Canyons has a bunch terrain on the way down that doesn't see much traffic (because it is The Canyons, stupid) so you can ease up your indexes and let it go.

Recommended Route:
S%$!

There are so many ways to get up there, some are less excrutiating than those listed in other reviews. You've got lifts running from all three resorts- you can grab a beer and ride PCMR's town lift up for pete's sake.

There is also the guardsman road, about to be paved in the next summer or two. The squiggly tr is just below the way up to the overlook. And watch out for the dang moose. there's no shortage of em

The crest.

Summary:
Great trail! Definitely an epic ride. It's almost completely single track and a lot of it is shaded so you can do it in the middle of the day without too much trouble. We started from the parking lot at Park City and rode over to the bottom of Town Lift and up Sweeney Switchbacks. You might need to know your way around Park City to do it this way. The climb up Sweeneys has a few rough spots and would be an excellent descent so be prepaired for a good climb. You have to ride a bit of access road when you get up into PCMR then you connect back onto single track, around the front and into the Thaynes Canyon side of the mountain. The single track through the resort is pretty good stuff, but the real meat of the trail begins at the junction with Spiro and Mid-Mountain. Take time to stop at the view points and take a breather cause there are some long sections of trail without a break in them but it is excellent single track all the way to the Canyons. From there you have to climb for another half hour or so but the descent down is all single track now, not fire road or anything like that. The descent is fast, not too technical (from a downhillers perspective) but a blast to ride. We then hit the pavement back to the parking lot at PCMR. My buddy's cyclometer measured it at 25 miles and it took us about 5 hours but we chilled for a while at the view points and talked smack to each other.

Recommended Route:
Climb up Sweeney Switchbacks, across PCMR to Mid-Mountain, over to The Canyons, down the descent and on the pavement back to where you started.

Other recommended trails in the same area:
Fireswamp and Thieves Forest at Deer Valley, they are killer downhills

Summary:
This is a long ass ride! It will take average riders a lot longer than 2-3 hours and make sure you bring extra carbs and water. Even though there is very little uphill, you may be spanked by the end. Most of the single track is pretty good, some of it pretty rocky and the stretch of it in the Canyons before mid mountain connector is great. The last four miles on double track are straight down. It feels great to go fast after 14 miles of fairly level single track. This ride is perfect in late September, the temps are right and the leaves are beautiful.

Recommended Route:
Do it as a loop. It's better to start at the canyons rather than PCMR. This way you get a mellow 2 mile paved warmup before the Spiro hill climb. You won't wanna do this after 20 odd miles of mountain riding. Park at The Canyons lower lot, take the paved path into town and head to Spiro.
